I've seen eclipses before, they are really no big deal. If were "in the path of totality" or whatever that stupid catch phrase is, I would still have better things to do. |
Sammy, not impressed by one of Gods greatest celestial displays.
|
I do love the FACT that the science deniers are NOT denying the eclipse as a fact. They deny science took men to the moon and back, they deny vaccines are a good thing. There really are thousands of people they believe the earth is flat and deny they science of orbits and physics the planets orbit the sun. Of course some 8% of American believe Elvis is alive so maybe it is no surprising that the fools deny medical sciences and go for homeopathic poppycock or crystals.
This eclipse was predicted and written up in science books back in the 1960s. No is is denying what is happening today. |
10:00 AM here in the path. Clear sky. Looking out the window, I'd surmise the light is definitely dimmer. Cindy watching the TV hype. Kind of weird to see the light dim when the shadows are from the sun in the eastern sky.
We didn't bother to buy glasses, so not going outside. 10:22 AM now...getting light again. I feel sorry for those who travelled far to be here. |

As good as it's gonna get in SFO... Surprised at how bright it is outside even with 70% of the sun gone ! way lighter than pic suggests (behind filter) |
92% Eclipse here in Lake Cle Elum. Great view from the front porch...Never got as dark as I thought it would, but tempature sure dropped....
|
Arggg!
It was clear all morning. I got my camera set up at 12:30 and took some test shots. By 1:00 the clouds had moved in and there was NO view of the sun. Guess I'll watch on tv. At 12:30 http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1503337754.jpg At 1:00 - just imagine a snowstorm. |
A bit freaky! A big storm tolled in right as the eclipse was starting.
|
This is fire and brimstone stuff! HUGE hail storm now.

I have seen eclipses before. A shadow of the moon is a great celestial display? really? Seems as if some folks don't understand what an eclipse really is. Look, I can put my hand up to keep the sunlight out of my eyes. HEY IT'S AN ECLIPSE! |

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...de26d4fb54.jpg Sammy do you see shadows like this everyday? No you don't. That is what is cool about it. At the peak here in OKC. I was driving a short time later and forgot to put on sunglasses. The light looked like I had my sunglasses on. When I put on the sunglasses that I always wear when driving it was almost too dark. To be clear, I was NOT looking at the sun, just the traffic and the road in front of me for normal driving. |

Greenville was perfect viewing today. 90% clear skies. saw the same shadow effect on the driveway noted above too. This is with Samsung S7 phone, max zoom during the peak of the eclipse.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1503342333.jpg The second one is of the crescent shaped shadows on the driveway. Very cool too. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1503342507.jpg |
Well....I can look up most humd, summer days in the afternoon and see a bunch of clouds....today was no different :(.
Can't wait 'til they air a repeat of Geraldo opening Al Capone's vault however :) |
It was too cloudy here in Jax. Total fake news event hyped by the media. ;)
|
Glen, I saw the same shadows in KS. Pretty cool. Very surprised how bright it still was, we were something like 93%. Looked like early evening. I'm always happy to see people get excited about science stuff.
|
Here in North county San Diego we noticed the brightness and heat dropped noticeably. It was fun to walk from a shade spot to full sun and not feel any temperature change. Lasted 10 minutes or so before it was back to normal. Watched live on CNN and I'm glad that folks who travelled to 100% zones were happy for the effort.

We had 97% clear skies for where I am in Houston from the start of the eclipse until it's peak at 66%. A cloud came past just after the peak, it cleared up a few mins later, but I didn't need to see the sun come back, besides, that would have involved leaving the apt. I was able to watch from 1145-1320 from out of our window.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1503344640.jpg You can see some sunspots in this one. With your eyes the sunspots were MUCH darker and more distinct and you can see a lot more detail in them. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1503344640.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1503344640.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1503344640.jpg |
Visiting my son in Blacksburg, Va. About 97% totality. Temperature drop was very dramatic. I'm glad I watched it, may be my last.

best i could do with no practice
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1503345171.JPG EDIT: the colors were much richer than that |
Once the massive storm passed I was able to see the eclipse at maybe 90%. Pretty cool.

A little darker here in Atlanta but not too bad. It was almost an early twilight.
My wife was in charleston but it was overcast with a storm coming in. |

In MN we were only going to get 82 percent coverage.
It was very cloudy, but got to see the sun right at the start and it peeked out of a small spot in the clouds at its highest point for literally about 30 seconds and then mostly cloud cover with a couple glimpse. Never got dark at all, no more than a gloomy day. |
Pitch black here in Charleston SC at 2:45 PM....
|
|
Didn't notice a thing.

Was foggy in my town, so I jumped in the car and drove about 30 minutes north/inland. Amazing number of people on the shoulder of the freeway doing the same.
Was able to get a reasonable view of our partial eclipse through my binocular contraption: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1503352496.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1503352496.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1503352496.jpg |

The wife and I looked at it through binocs during totality. Really enjoyed the whole thing. The box I made with a filter window for the binocs was okay, but not really worth the trouble (partly because it was so tough even finding it through 10X50 viewing). I ditched it and had a piece of film I looked through with my eyeglasses on during the 7 mins. preceding totality and my sweetie had a pair of "glasses" she wore over her eyeglasses. We then traded off the binocs back and forth until totality ended. Clear skies in our area, but there was a rainstorm about 5 miles to the Southeast... those people missed it. |

St George, SC crappy weather but 100% totality, very cool. We were sitting on a bench in town on the main drag, the street lights came on one by one it was pitch black for a minute or so and then the street lights started turning off. Very strange, getting very dark quickly just before and then just as quickly getting lighter again.
We drove up from Florida, spent the night in Savannah, was worth it. |
We're all racisits!!!
I'm one of y'all.......a racists...

It did not get that dark in Michigan, sort of a pre-storm like sky with stark shadows. Beware: A solar eclipse can blind you https://www.cbsnews.com/news/solar-eclipse-can-blind-you/ Quote:
