Cutting Cable TV
Well, were doing it!
I have to keep the Cable internet, but Cable TV is going going gone! When I switched back to Comcast/Xfinity+internet, it is $150 for the first year. Second year, it jumped to $235/mth. My contract expired and they raised the bill to $285!!!! I found Sling TV. It works through computer, Chrome Cast, Apple TV, Roku, etc. The $25 basic package included every channel we watch, except local (buying attic antenna) and FoxNews (only watch Brett Baier). I added HBO and Cinemax for $25/mth. The internet access is going to go to $59/mth. Our new total, without really losing anything, is $109. Anyone else go to Sling TV? |
Fox news streams live on youtube.
I like sling, but dish network owns it. Only a matter of time for them to go crazy with the pricing. I wonder if you can do sling in business. |
Damm James, I would quit too or at least change to another service. I had a post earlier about the mass confusion I caused the Indian accented lady for Cox when I said I did not want a contract. Those great prices you have seen on all the TV ads or internet ads are all for a 12 or 24 month contract. I guess not many say "hey I do not want one" or "what happens if I die since I am old now"!!?? Whew want a kerfluggle at any rate I stay with a service, AT&T Uverse, since it has the channels my wife (happy wife...happy life) likes and I do such as AHC, Science, Smithsonian and RFD (train shows) so it is okay. I download enough from the newsgroups so the service probably pays for itself? In most cases if I would wait a week or two all TV series and shows are in something like alt.binaries.TV.HD264, ETC.

Nice! I switched to sling and haven't looked back. Also have amazon prime and found out prime member get addition entertainment for free. I use an antenna in the attic to pick up all the regular networks and have Netflix so I think we're pretty well covered. You will need a decent internet speed however. Good luck.

150 Mbps, with 122 real world.

did it over a year ago. was hard to convince the wife. she thought she was losing something. she now says she doesnt get why she was so against it. waste of money if you ask me. well done.

I dropped Cable TV completely around 2008 or so, but it was because I got tired of conspiracy tin hat "History" channel, blathering 24/7 non-news, faggy "reality tv" hosts - in fact all male hosts of every reality tv show is either faggy or just weird, slackjawed redneck or inbred Okie.
Fast forward to today, I'm wondering if I should go with Cable TV internet or AT&T fiber optic for the office. I know that I'm leaning toward the latter, but I'm building a space for my parents to spend their spare time in, host friends, etc. Sort of a parent-cave. I think Dad will want Cable TV to the upstairs. So that leaves me to wonder should I hook up both? I'm building it so that I can route Cable, fiber, telephone to the building. |
We switched a little over a year ago to Roku devices ( multiple TV's ) and use Sling and Hulu as the main go to hosting sites . We are doing this in two homes , one with AT&T U-Verse the other with Windstream DSL and it works great at both homes .
|
I strongly considered going Sling, but to get adequate internet performance means Cox cable internet at around $80/mo. After adding the cost for Sling and to buy Rokus for my TVs I decided to stay with U-verse for another 2 years at $130/mo.

I get basic, an HD box, & a HDDVR from the city for under a hundy. I record everything so I don't have to see many commercials. I love the thirty second forward button, works good for sports too. I'd figure something else out before I sign a contract, too many other solutions these days.

I guess that's supposed to be chic these days  |
150 a month... for cable TV? Never mind 235 or 289
I chucked mine out years ago because i figured 30 a month wasn't worth it. |
Hey...I resemble that inbred Okie remark!
|
^ You can host your own Cable TV show !!!!
|
Cut mine a year ago. Went with Playstation Vue because they had Bein Sports for Moto GP, but they lost that. Now I have to watch it on YouTube. Other than that have not missed cable at all. The DVR function works better than my cable service ever did.
|
I'm headed that way - very soon....
Playstation Vue and Amazon Fire TV plus indoor digital antenna. Going to Ooma for land line. Just need a decent internet provider. I'll probably stick with the one I have now - Spectrum (used to be Brighthouse) but need to call them and verify pricing and speed quality. Playstation Vue is a download, right? Where is the best place to buy the Amazon Fire TV? |
Second question.....which gives better speed from modem to firebox...ethernet or wi-fi?
|
ethernet generally speaking.

Looks like Target has the Amazon Fire TV for $89.99 which seems reasonable enough - especially considering what I will be saving on my cable bill. I need a new digital camera so will probably get one of those while I'm there. Thanks!!! |
