run steer tires in drive position mixed with lug tires?
I just got two super nice matching steer tires for pennies,at the truck shop across the street from me . I have two really nice steers up front now, but they do not match. I was going to move them to the rear , and mix them with two lug tires that I already have .
Do not really plan on using the truck in much bad weather. Not a long distance hauler either. I know we have a few truckers here, hopefully Pete will respond. Im trying not to go too deep $ on my tow truck project .

What size tire Fred?
I run 225/70/19.5 on my one ton and use recaps all the way around (winter deep is the tread name). I don't think my tire guy recaps anything smaller than 19.5 I doubt your steer and lug tires will match up height wise very good but they might.

I think I'd put the two new steers away until you need them up front.
Or sell them to me! LOL.... |

Do tire shops still shave tires anymore?
I once got a single oddball flat replacement for a 4wd subaru, and the thing pulled like heck at only 50mph. The other three tires still had plenty tread left but the new one had a different tread pattern. It was almost undrivable. Had to get them all replaced the next day. I was suspecting diameter was the issue. Last edited by john70t; 09-01-2017 at 06:34 PM.. |

These days, liability lawyers keep anyone from doing anything common sense if it modifies the path to the deep pockets.

Sometimes it isn't worth trying to squeeze a buck. Sometimes you need to look at yourself Fred, and say, ''I'm a successful person. What would a successful person do in this circumstance. ?''.
Sometimes the things I say may seem harsh Fred, but I am always rooting for you. Spend a dollar right, and you will not have to screw around with a problem later. Then you can concentrate on more important things. Then, once in a while, you can look forward , and ask yourself what the really important things are besides dealing with stuff all the time. |

I get it, no worries . Appreciate your advice . That being said, I like dealing with stuff.
I am really enjoying restoring this old truck. I am doing it at home , instead of at work. Like therapy for me, more about the journey , than the destination . To do this right, I will spend more in wheels and tires than the value of the truck, and I am really only using it to move vehicles around my parking lot. I will be surprised if this sees 500 miles in a year . I most likely, will only have this truck for a year or two . Really want a diesel top kick , or an international . Tires are old school 900-20 tube type tires on split ring wheels . Replacement wheels are 300+ plus per wheel x6, and new tires are 300 ish each,+ tubes and flaps . I am not pinching pennies here . I actually enjoy finding my way around expensive problems . Anybody can stroke a check .

Are they Dayton (open center) or Budd style wheels?
Any military surplus places near you? Just did a quick search on surplus tires and wheels. There are some on ebay 75.00 tire and wheel.

No surplus places near me unfortunately. I considered the military tire thing. Shipping is the ulitmate killer on that deal, as well as any other used tire that is not within driving distance of me.
I have in my possession right now , 6 good tires with good tread, and no dry rot, but 2 of them are the non matching steer tires I mentioned. I've been beating the bushes looking for decent used locally, but honestly, they just do not pop up all that often. I am going to keep watching and waiting , as I will not be on the road till spring anyhow . As always, appreciate the advice .
