Well... It's powered by a 3.5-liter VQ35DE with ~ 12 psi of boost from a Precision 6262, is running a blended race gas, and has Mickey Thompson drag radials up front. The owner/driver was Marcos Chavez.

Reminds me of an old Brit Top Gear where the lads took three near supercars to a local drag strip. At the end of the happening, a sad faced Jeremy said; "I don't like drag racing."

This video got me to remember a USAC road race at Texas World Speedway at College Station TX in December 1970.

It was a six-hour event that started around 4:00pm, ended at night and was run on the long course that winds inside and outside the 2-mile oval.

Two things stood out about that race.

One was two astronauts from Houston with a white 911 Porsche that had the first electro-luminescent door numbers I had seen. Odd watching the green numbers circulating around the track at night.

Other thing was two guys from Monterrey Mexico showed up with a red 1967 notchback Mustang. Car looked too stock to even be allowed to race.

That Mexican Mustang was FAST and the guys driving it were good. The car either won its class or won overall.

Still laugh about those guys and their sleeper Mustang.

ETA: Eased over to their pits a couple times half expecting to see the Rodriguez brothers. Folks said these guys were regulars at the Monterrey Autodromo.

tcar, your post about Pedro Rodriguez and his younger brother Ricardo got me to go searching.

The red Mexican Mustang still exists and has been for sale recently in Indiana. I did not know it was a Holman-Moody special build. One of two. I should have known...

1967 Ford Mustang - Significant Cars, Inc.

"According to Lee Holman, Holman Moody built 2 Mustangs in 1967, a fastback which was sent to Pedro Rodriguez of Formula 1 fame and this car, which was owned by a Mr Flores and raced by "Batman" Christobal Galjluf to many victories in Argentina, Peru, and Mexico. It was returned to Holman Moody in 1971 and converted to Trans Am Specification. In 1993, the 289 was replaced with this Ford Racing 302 High Nickel Alloy block, 10.5 comp pistons, and NASCAR Aluminum heads. Holman billed Flores just under $30,000 for this rebuild. The car was acquired by a Peruvian Museum and kept in a climate controlled setting for the ensuing years. The car remained in South America until recently being imported by our client. The car needs recommissioned, but represents a great opportunity to acquire a true Holman Moody Race Car at an affordable price with strong upside down the road.
Being a Race car, the car is sold on Bill of Sale, along with all importation paperwork.
$195,000"
