Anyone know how to affordably ship a scooter from Portland OR to NY NY?

Friend in NYC is looking for a vintage Vespa and I will give her mine, if it isn't expensive to ship. They're only worth $2K or so.

Motoshippers. Owned by a friend. Not cheap though, likely $500 or $600 for coast to coast.

I tried one of the sites where you let people tender a bid first, but that went nowhere fast for me.

Not gonna help in your case because they work mostly in the eastern and central time zones - I have used Keyboard Motorcycle Transport 3 times with good luck. They are the actual shippers, not brokers. They have specially designed dollies to secure and transport motorcycles. $625 from anywhere to anywhere in the eastern and central time zones. Possibly someone else can benefit from this info. I was referred to them by people on this forum! :) Do not use Uship!

Try forward air. they used to do full size arcade games for $175.

Also, is it too big for greyhound shipping?

Thanks. I'll check out those places. $600 seems reasonable. It is pretty much the size of a motorcycle, can't imagine it'd go Greyhound.

Anyway, make sure to specify "this side up" or "no tip."

Even with no fluids, sometimes you can get in a mess because the way you tie it down won't survive a horizontal trip.

Why not use uship?

I shipped my Indian Chief from Boston to Calgary in 2008 with TFX international. It was painless and not overly expensive.

After they dropped off my bike and Danny Heatly’s BMW, they were picking up 3 Ferrari’s to haul out to Vancouver.

Failing that, why not ride it?

I heard bad reports - a broker not actual shipper.

Uship is NOT a broker in the way that brokers normally operate in the shipping world. It is a website that directly connects shipping customers to shippers, which can include brokers but Uship is not the broker.

I've used Uship under the condition that I will not deal w brokers, only direct shippers. It is not hard to discern them from each other if you have half a brain, the brokers openly admit what they are when asked.

I've had nothing but good luck using them and the price was always as cheap as possible due to the bidding system. It is either an auction, (w the lowest qualifying shipper winning), or an offer system where you offer the price you are willing to pay to ship X object from point A-B.

The shipper offered by Motion on the top of thread is one of the best in the USA and they built their business 100% using Uship.

I think these guys picked up my RS1100 when I sold it. Hands down the most impressive motorcycle shippers I've seen. They do pianos and motorcycles.

Well I was perfectly happy w Keyboard.

Why not go to cratex and have a custom pallet made? Ship it FedEx Freight? I know within Canada (and even across the border) they are the least expensive LTL (less than truckload) shippers.

I sent some equipment a similar size and weight across Canada and back this spring for anodizing and it was under $500 each way. After I got it back, we assembled this thing and shipped to Illinois for about the same amount of money, again using FedEx Freight.
