Thank You Servicemen.
As I think about tomorrow, I give thanks to those that came before me, served with me, and afterwards.
The legendary actions of Howard Walter Gilmore were the reason he was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously. As Commanding Officer of USS Growler (SS-215) on her fourth war patrol, Commander Gilmore, turned into an onrushing enemy gunboat and rammed it at 17 knots. As the two ships closed, the gunboat's machine guns raked the bridge of Growler killing the AOOD, Ensign William and lookout F3/C Kelley. Gilmore was badly wounded. The order had already been given to clear the bridge and to dive. The vents were open and the ship was submerging. As the men in the Conn waited for the last of the bridge party, Gilmore, Kelley and William to come down, they heard Gilmore order "TAKE HER DOWN." It is this unselfish sacrifice that demonstrates the finest in the submarine force tradition.

Remembrance Day tomorrow.
In Flanders Fields: In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. — Lt.-Col. John McCrae God Bless, -matt |

As the years pass, this day makes reflecting on war/combat one of growing emotions. I assume most of us get more sentimental with age.
The word that lingers more strongly now is guilt. That may sound odd to some. Young men with their entire lives yet to be lived...erased, no future. Why was I spared while other fell? Chance? Fate? The very randomness of living. Emotions ...words escape me. The only comfort is in a life well lived, holding close those loved ones and trying to make a difference. If you have experienced combat, the death of friends ...you know. Semper Fi brothers.

I'll give a shout-out to my dad, WWII ETO vet (far right holding the .30 cal). Survived hell on earth in the Huertgen Forest where dead GIs were stacked like cordwood. Made it back and is just shy of his 89th birthday. My thanks to him and to all you vets out there.
