tax time - dependent w/ a job
Wife and I file jointly, I'm only income earner, taxes have been simple.
My oldest dependent got a part time job last year ($4k earned, appropriately withheld), so she needs to do taxes too. We'll both be using Turbo Tax. Before I start, do I want to do hers then mine or mine then hers or it doesn't matter? I'm assuming that as I do mine (or she does hers) there will be a question somewhere about "did this dependent earn w-2 wages/etc" or "is someone claiming you as a dependent?" Anything special I need to check for? |
From what I remember. You still claim her as a dependent. I don't think they ask you if she made money.
When she files, they will ask if she's a dependent. It shouldn't matter which one of you does the taxes first. |
You claim dependency exemption for your child, so your child should not take a personal exemption on their 1040 (probably 1040EZ). This is a checkbox on the turbotax input screens, or will be a question if you use “interview” method.

To claim your daughter, she must be under 19 years old at the end of 2017. If she is a full time student, she must be under 24.
