Turbo Tax

I used Turbo tax again this year but was disappointed to find that they asked for a credit card number for an extra $26.49 to E-file the state return. My wife purchased Turbo Tax Deluxe that says: Federal Returns / Federal E-File / State Returns. Pretty sure state e-file was included last year. I thought it a little sleazy that they advertise "State Return" but when you try to file it you have to cough up extra money. Let the buyer beware!

The versions I have always bought only had a free federal e-file.

I just print my state return and use snail mail. Way cheaper than the cost to e-file. If I own for the state, I wait until April 13th or so to mail it. This year I got a little back and it has gone through and I got my refund just a few days after the Federal refund.

I've used Turbo Tax for at least 10 years and they have always charged for electronic filing for state. The state return is free but to file electronicly costs....

That said, I feel ripped off this year as I did not read the fine print. I paid $19.99 to file electronically but then was charged and additional $29.99 to this fee deducted from my refund. Had I used a credit card, the total would have been $19.99 only. I will hopefull remember this scam next year.

Reminds me of when I went to Canada and got certain tax credits at customs and then had to pay extra to receive my refund in USD.

Many states have a free online system. Pay Turbo tax or whoever to help with the fed and then plug the #'s into the state, ~10min usually.

just checked the box that my TT disc was in. Front says in contains both fed and state tax returns.
Back of the box (small print) it says an additional $19.99 to E-file the state form.

That is how it has been for years. It will calculate and prepare you state taxes. E-file is extra. Just print them and mail then for way under a buck.

Stopped using Turbo Tax years ago due to their misleading info that made me believe that I was buying a package that included State filing.

I now use FreeTaxAct like another poster and it is a bit over $12 bucks all said and done to complete all my tax filling including State; they also automatically transfer information each year, Turbo used to charge for that.

Little tip to try, call them up and complain about feeling misled; I did and they refunded every dime that I paid including the e-file and the amount I paid for the package that I thought included State, think it was about $33.

I always thought is was the State of IL that did this - apparently not.

Fed is free - my 23 yr old did his taxes on TT. It was the first time he filed himself.

They got me with the same thing. I will never use Turbo Tax again, very misleading.

What is this state filing of which you speak. Oh wait, I think when I was 16 and lived in VA, I had to file. THat's the only time I've ever had to file state. I've always lived in FL or TX, no state taxes.
