Toilet seats

We've had the discussion on which toilet. Now we need a discussion on "where the rubber meets the road".

Mrs. Beard is complaining that the toilet seat in the guest bathroom has a chip and that the one in the master needs replacing. She picked up 2 from Bed Bath and Beyond. As I went to install, one was already dented on the seat and the other had a chunk missing from the lid! Stupid particle board... I considered making 1 good out of 2 bad ones...

Home Depot has a selection and I've, god forbid, read the reviews on toilet seats.

I'm not really interested in a plastic one, unless it is as thick and substantial as the wood ones.

Looking for one that will not mar easily from often cleaning!

I guess I'd prefer one NOT made from particle board, as I expect they won't last.

Kohler has one, called "Stone Wood" that is supposed to be extra compressed, heavy duty wood. If the attachment system is the same as the Kohler units Mrs. Beard picked up, I may pass.

The ones being replaced are "Bemis" which is the cheaper brand from Home Depot. I'm pretty sure I replaced these two in the past 14 years. Not a memorable experience...

Slow close: Sounds good, but as was noted by one reviewer, they can also be "slow open". The seat has to be held in place for a second for it to stay up. I know this isn't an issue for the girls...

Are there higher end, heavy duty, plastic ones? Are there higher end wood ones?

Will the one star monster plague this thread?

I've had four Kohler toilets for the last 20 years and only replaced one seat. It was plastic and it cracked because I accidentally dropped it. The other three look as good as the day they were new.

The replacement that I bought came from Kohler, it is also plastic. It's the slow open, slow close model. It took one use to get used to that. No big deal.

It's the quick release version, so it removes for cleaning in a couple seconds. I happen to like that feature.

I do not shop for toilet seats at big box stores...

My opinion, I will send you the bill later...

I gave you five stars, mostly to make tabs jealous.

The "slow open" feature concerns me.

javadog 02-25-2018 08:13 AM

It doesn't really open slow, I just have to hold it in the open position for a half a second for it to stay open...

And, that's when it's brand new. Once it's broken in, which doesn't take long, that's not even necessary.

I went with the "Stone Wood". Whatever coating they used for the wood, it seems to be much more substantial. The attachment was EXACTLY the same hardware as the Bemis. Exactly.

I checked the Kholer website as well, but didn't find anything else. There did appear to be a duplicate to the "Stonewood" with a slightly different name. Probably done so that one big box store doesn't carry the same model, like mattresses.

At least I have a good topic for dinner tonight...

MY grandmother had the fuzzy cover for the *top* part, but even she wasn't cool enough to have a fuzzy cover for the *bottom* part...

That thing makes my skin crawl, there is no washing machine out there that will get that clean...

Pazuzu - Excellent, I'm stealing the pic to post on facebook.

But where are the harnesses? Necessary for a severe bout of food poisoning, and colonoscopy prep.

Back in my dating days I always knew for sure a chick was truly single when you go to "borrow" the bathroom and there is the thick knitted cover on the tank, and the lid. It simply will not sty up, much less the seat with it. One must be talented to hold the led and seat up the entire time of relieving oneself, with one hand.

I have been to a rich friends house with my wife. She mentioned the seat was heated. Now that is high living!

Came across one of these(Toto) in a fine hotel in Maui. Wife fell IN LOVE. I thought it was the weirdest thing in the world, until I tried it...

^+1. Also made by a company called Brondell. We have two. Heated seats, slow drop, and all of the features of a bidet. Pretty darn cool.

My dogs treat any toilet as a water bowl. I can't imagine what they'd do with a fancy toilet that would give them the option of a water fountain, too.

mine will be remote controlled. :)

javadog 02-26-2018 11:13 AM

Remote control? Oh, baby. Let the games begin...

The next time you have guests over for dinner, let your inner teenager run amok.

dad911 02-26-2018 11:57 AM

Is there an iPhone app for that?

Oh yeah...water temp setting...cold as possible!

daepp 02-26-2018 02:56 PM

You can set water temp, motion sensing night light, times per day to preheat seat, etc etc.......

Ah, Toto's magic wand. She may love it for reasons slightly different than those you enjoy. :p

This motion sensing night light, does it flash a warning light outside whenever it senses one has had a motion, or does the toilet shout out SUCCESS.
