So it is settled

If ya'll recall my daughter had received a full academic ride to University of Alabama.

Then she got accepted to NorthEastern and Tulane.

Tulane matched the Alabama dollars but they are also 50% more expensive so not as good a deal.

Still, she was set on Tulane.

She had one school left to hear from.

Over the weekend she got accepted to Wash U.

We just got her scholarship info, Wash U is giving her 60% more than Alabama or Tulane and surprisingly Wash U is cheaper than Tulane.

This is a no brainer.

Nice :)

I would have been asking for Tulane too, vs. University of Alabama. That's not even in the same zip code. Both academically as well as venue :) Glad it worked that you got something everyone like$! Congrats!

She will enjoy Northeastern, great school! :D

So what is the final decision?

It's a no-brainer, but obviously I don't have a brain.

;)

Well done sm on the success of your daughter. It is great to have choices and I am sure your family is a great team in supporting her. Good for her.:)

A fine example of parenting. Congrats!

Unless I am misunderstanding something, Wash U (St Louis) is not the same as U Wa (Seattle).

Congrats to the sm family.

What does she want to major in? Make sure the school she picks offers what she wants to study. My daughter was accepted to a bunch of schools and chose Northeastern because being well known for Neurology, she then went on to Emery for her doctorate in Neurology. As they are world renown for their program there. Same with my son, was accepted to a bunch of schools, and went to RIT for engineering, which they are well known for. Where your daughter goes and gets her degree from is very important when it comes to getting a job. Employers will look at what school she is coming from as well as her degree.

If she does something she loves....she'll never have to work a day in her life.....

She's thinking Poli Sci so that'll mean a Law Degree.

Tulane is a great school but it's top 40, number 40 actually.

Wash U is a Tier 1 school. it's top 20 in every curriculum.

Part of the decision making was being driven / influenced by my SIL.

She owns her own recruiting agency in Manhattan.

She was pushing for Tulane because she has zero issues placing their grads.

She also advocated heavily for Northeastern over Tulane but for a variety of reasons that was choice 3.

When she heard my daughter made Wash U she was more excited than everyone else.

She hardly ever places Wash U grads because they get snatched up before they graduate, according to her.

LOL, yeah. I really liked Alabama. Bigger school but she made honors college there and I thought it would have been a better fit for her.

Sending her to New Orleans was causing me lost sleep.

Wash U is perfect for her. It's got the smaller class size, ranked number 1 campus in the country this year, safe, and the overall vibe is right up her ally.

They are even footing the bill to fly her in next month for a tour and orientation. Who does not love that.

It's similar to Rice which was on the list way back but after visiting she found the student body to be somewhat "sterile" and that turned her off.

Sorry Shaun. It was comforting for me knowing she'd have an "Uncle Shaun" around but can't turn down the opportunity.

Congratulations. It is very satisfying to watch good things happen to our children.

I had not heard of Washington University.

Quick google search: Nice and love the location!

Yea, but Alabama has a lot better football team!

wdfifteen 03-21-2018 01:20 AM

Looks like a good place. Ranks high in all the stats.
Plus the school mascot is a laughing, possibly drunken, bear. So she's got that going for her.

She got back from her tour of Wash U last night.

They flew her out on their dime and gave her a couple days of real immersion.

She bunked with a sophomore in the dorms, ate in the student dining halls, audited a couple of classes, hung out in the commons socializing in the evening.

Way different experience than a typical college visit where you get a 1/2 hour presentation then a 1 hour walking tour of campus and it's over.

She still loves Tulane but Wash U is hands down a better school plus they are giving her $40K a year to attend, with what we have in her college fund if she snags a couple more scholarships she can get out of there with her Masters debt free.

She signed her commit papers last night.
