Meet our new watchdog

Salvador Daggi, our watchdog!
Salvador was our joint art project for last winter. We weren't going to bring him out until he was finished, but the way things are going, finishing him will be the winter 2019 project. So Mrs WD brought him out and he sits by the door now keeping "watch." Like any good hound he still has a few bald patches, but we'll take care of that next winter.

A long time ago I alluded to the project in this post. We went through at least 30 pounds of old watches to get the ones we wanted.

Awesome. I’m not too proud to admit it took me a few seconds to “get it”.

masraum 04-29-2018 11:36 AM

I love it! How tall is it? I can’t get the size perspective.

Looks like it might have a problem with ticks.

Crowbob 04-29-2018 04:42 PM

I bet that guy gets a little wound up at times.

He’s about 34 inches tall - a resin casting.

Yeah, it’s fun to watch the reactions when someone comes over and we tell them he’s called “Salvador Daggi.”

“Ticks”
“Wound up”
LOL! You guys are giving me great material!

Hey, when you finish that one, I'll give you $20 to whip up another one for me. Can you have it done by Memorial day? ;)

Are you buying watch parts from ebay or all of the cheap watches that you can find from garage/yard/rummage sales or...? What are you using to glue the stuff on? Are you going to coat/paint it with a clear or something when you get done? It would be great if you could do a kind of thick clear resin/epoxy over the whole thing, to protect it and make it easier to clean/dust.

This is a very cool project that is turning out really well.

LOL...what's next?

A tack dawg ;)

He has a sweet face.

Great project.

Best
Les

$20 would about cover the glue. Even if you supplied parts we’d be making 10 cents an hour. We buy old watches by the pound on eBay and get some at garage sales. We sort them then and put the good ones in a vise one at a time to distort the case so we can pry the back off. Then pry out the works with the face hopefully intact. Super glue the hands to the face and pry the face off of the movement. The faces are attached to the movement with four tiny pins that have to be ground off with a Dremel. Then we find a spot where it will fit and use Mrs WD’s jewelry making tools to form it to fit the contour of the body. We atttach whole faces with RTV and small pieces with super glue. Every piece takes at least 15 minutes and sometimes half an hour.

That's pretty cool. Patrick....thanks for sharing! Woof! :)

Very cool. Maybe some day I'll have tons of "extra" time and patience and an appropriate dog to attach them to.

Salvadore Dali was an interesting guy.

If possible, visit a Dali 'museum'. There's a good one in Florida. In the background of just about every one of his paintings is a mountain range. One of hundreds of childhood memories he was unable to relinquish in adulthood, which was fraught with idiosyncrasies borderline on the psychotic.

The 'soft clocks' he is so famous for was his expression of the malleability of time. He and Albert Einstein held such an idea in common.

the Vatican. there is an original Dali there. i come around the corner of what was essential like the garage of the Vatican. just artifacts everywhere. okay, it felt like a junky garage. walk past the REAL mummy, step over Excaliber, take a turn and BOOM!! a real Dali!! it was one of the melting clock ones. blew me away being face to face with one.

Crowbob 05-01-2018 03:09 PM

Don't get me started on Vatican City.

Bestowed upon me not that long ago was an invite to Vatican City. Did the ceiling, of course. St. Peter's. The Vatican catacombs.

Though not in Rome, I actually swooned. Yep swooned when I realized my presence included a very, very early frescoe by Michelangelo.

Anyway, The Church has always been cognizant of so-called 'modern' art. There are some very interesting things displayed in the narrow halls of the Vatican labyrinthe on your way to the Cistine Chapel.
