Gopher snake mates ?
I recently caught a beautiful 4' Gopher snake and while we were building a nice "big" terrarium a smaller snake appeared.
We caught her? and after a short period she? escaped. She returned two more times and then we caught her again. My question is: Can they be housed in the same cage? If they are both males, will they fight? How can a identify the gender? Another question is: do they communicate? She seems to have known we were holding the other snake (her mate?). |
the males are typically larger.
no, they don't communicate. no, they won't fight even if both are male. they will tend to return to the area where they hatched. if any are females, she may be carrying eggs, it's the time of year, and returning to her original den to lay them. |
you captured wild snakes and are keeping them as pets. ?

The pet store versions are house trained, right?

you know how to keep a snake healthy?
UV lighting? and stuff? that snake will tame down with artificial lighting. |

Touche' is a 41 year old Cal. Dessert tortoise I raised from an egg. His mom was with me for 55 years. Sultan is a Sulcata found roaming the streets of N. Hollywood. You should hear the crazy stories he has to tell. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1526495896.jpg Speedy is a Leopard that was given to me in the will of a old girlfriend. If you think his rock climbing is cool you should see him base jump....lol http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1526495958.jpg These guys are just friends from around the property. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1526495987.jpg |
wow!!
i had a sulcata. lost her in a breakup with a crazy girlfriend. she refused to give "hannah" back. she got huge and i heard from a friend of a friend Hannah now lives in the el paso city zoo. i cannot confirm or deny this. i would get another, but they are such a commitment. i think a leopard would be a better fit. is yours super shy and reclusive? you have a great hobby bud!! |

I think caring for living creatures is a great "hobby". I wish more people could interact with God's creatures. Maybe we'd threat each our better. How many people out there actually believe that turtles are just rocks with legs? |

I never could understand the reptiles as pets thing. However, Rattle snake tastes pretty good and I love snapper soup with a hardboiled egg and a dash of Sherrie.:D

My wife had a Sulcata as a class room pet. He'd walk around the room among the kids (1st graders) and tended to situate himself in their midst when they were on the floor doing an activity. We couldn't keep him at school over night after a while because he'd wander around & set off the alarm. Plus he got big enough he could potentially bite. We had him until he got to 50 or 60 lb. & had to give him up to a family in Palm Springs who really enjoy him. His name was Turbo because it seemed like if you put him down & turned your head, he'd disappear. When I'd call his name, he'd stop in his tracks & finally locate me. Seemed like he didn't have directional ability with his hearing. I built a house for him that he liked a lot. Kept him from digging. In the pic of him in the doorway of his house, he'd hang like that for a long time.

We were up at the family property in Central Texas last week. We had a family of birds (I think phoebes?) nesting over the screen door on the porch. A rat snake showed up and crawled around under the nest trying to climb the screen. We thought the chicks were safe. Well, we were wrong. When no one was watching it must have somehow shinnied up the post and emptied the nest. Mother nature can be hard.

Fed them by hand until one of them latched on to my finger, thinking it was part of the food...nearly took a hunk of my skin off. :)
