My town has one. I like it. Fresh OJ, beer/wine,OTC drugs, condiments without having drive a couple hours.

Blast from the past.
Since I wrote this in 2018, my son started dating a Buyer for Dollar General, a Clemson graduate. She buys certain candies for DG, just getting started, based on analytics that made my modeling heart swell. We talked for an hour or so the first time we met - and trust me we both could have gone on and on. The level of analysis that goes not only into the purchase of bulk amounts of candy, but where the stocks are, what stores need them, age of the candy, current stock amount metrics, which hub, etc. They have tailored their models for specific regions, diets, time of year for specific candies, and so many other variables. Great stuff. Real numbers, with variables, so decisions can be made. As opposed to... |
I have one complaint about Dollar General....
My neighbors and I have an annual Christmas get-together where we get each other gag gifts. One of my neighbors (and good friend) is a cheap, rich, bastard so I decided for this year's gag gift I would get him a $1.00 gift card from Dollar General. They wouldn't sell me one. But....I told them that the sign on the building says "nothing over a dollar" but they wouldn't budge and said the min was $5. It ruined my gag gift but I was able to secure a $1 gift card from Grocery Outlet. Mission accomplished. |
We have 3 DGs in our town, but they lose out to family dollar because I can be in/out and back home in 5 minutes, 10 if I walk.

do they still only take cash?

We've got Dollar General and Family Dollar stores around here everywhere. Usually in the more remote areas that make easy targets for the thieves. But my go to dollar store is "Everything is a Dollar". I've found that true, with one exception. Cans of Vienna sausages are 59 cents each. :D
Reading glasses in any magnification you could ever want and made in China so you know the quality is on par with Foster Grants: $1 a pair. Silk flowers. Every kind of vibrant silk flower you could ever imagine with realistic plastic coated wire stems. $1 each. I can dress up the vases on the bronze tablets of my family members out at the cemetery for $20 every couple/3 months when I go see them. The old ones will still be very usable, so instead of throwing them away I randomly walk amongst those memorials without flowers, read their name out loud when I wish them well and place the flowers in their vase. Mother's day the ladies get them, Father's day the flowers go to the men. |

A friend of mine that I go riding with has 4 of his apt complexes in escrow now (dumping due to CA politics and tighten rent controls) so he can buy buildings down in the southern states cater jsut for those stores. He sat outside many DS with a stop watch and calculate the amount of time a buy was in the store and the approx amount of good purchased. I am told those places are BUSY. |
I hate shopping for anything. There are many stores I have never set foot in. DG is one of them - until recently.
I'm buying a present for an 11 yr old. He is the grandson of a woman I'm dating. He likes Legps and finding a gift was easy. As I'm checking out, I asked the store clerk where I could buy wrapping paper. She said, "next door at the DG". I walked in - amazing store. I didn't go up/down the asiles but from what I saw, I can see why people shop there. As others have said, quick, easy and fast. I paid $1 for the paper plus tax and honestly it was a bargin compared to the major chain stores. I told my g-friend about the experience and she laughed and said, "there is hope for you yet!" |

Someone else mentioned Family Dollar. The funny thing to me is, the Family Dollar in our small town is a mess. Dollar General is a cleaner store by far. |
I have no idea if I've ever been in a Dollar ____ (general, tree, family whatever).
I do know that the only times that I remember seeing them is if I'm in very small towns or older, poorer areas. |
The DG by my AZ vacation home has TV dinners, but the Marie Callendar ones sells out first. Swanson dinners aint the same no more
