more licensing BS

There is a bill that the Washington State Legislature is trying to
pass in Olympia that, if successful, will directly add huge costs to our
vehicle license fees. Everyone needs to know about so this situation
so that you can contact your representatives and voice your objection.

The bill is SB 6900 and it adds an "engine displacement" fee to the
vehicle license tabs upon renewal.

The fee has a varied amount depending on the size of the vehicle's
engine:

Engine Size (liters) Rate Schedule
Up to 1.9 $0
2.0 - 2.9 $70
3.0 - 3.9 $225
4.0 - 4.9 $275
5.0 - 5.9 $325
6.0 - 7.9 $400
8.0 or over $600

For each car & truck that you own, calculate the rate by matching the engine size in liters to the dollar amount. Add the amounts for each
vehicle and you'll see that the average two car family will be paying
$500+ every year in "displacement fees" on top of the normal license fees.
If you have three vehicles, you'll be paying even more.

The average family is already struggling with the high cost of
gasoline, electricity, food and everything else, and our lawmakers want us to pay more, thinking we have unlimited deep pockets. This will do great damage to the budgets of retirees on fixed incomes as well.

Now is the time to be very vocal against this bill.

I have contacted all of our representatives, and I would encourage
everyone reading this to do the same.

Here's the web page for the bill where you can read the text:

http://apps.leg.wa.gov/billinfo/summary.aspx?bill=6900&year=2007

Here's the link for contacting your representatives:

http://apps.leg.wa.gov/DistrictFinder/Default.aspx

If we don't threaten mass rebellion over this, they'll pass this bill
and we'll be paying huge fees every year on top o f their increase in
the gas tax. They have to know that we won't stand for any more
taxes or increase in licensing fees.

I've told my representatives that I will actively work to see that any
lawmaker that supports this bill is replaced at election time.

Please contact your legislators, then copy the text of this email,
and forward it to as many people as possible that you know in Washington

State, and encourage them to contact their representatives and
strongly voice their objection to this bill.

it really does appear that it's time to take the system down a few notches. only problem here is that the representatives that will replace the current crop - after another vote-the-bums-out episode - probably won't be much better

whats wrong with the way they do it now by weight?
http://www.dol.wa.gov/vehicleregistration/feechartvehweight.pdf

isnt displacement based on the weight of the vehicle already?
if the engine isnt large enough to move the vehicle it shouldnt be in there in the first place.

stupid politicos cant even figure out the system we already have works this way NOW.

I think I'm keeping the "2.4" on my grill and in my signature line for now.

The bill claims the tax is an effort to mitigate wear and tear on the roads and encourage fewer emissions. Seems illogical to tax a 3.2 driving 5,000 miles a year more than a 2.0 liter engine driving 100,000 miles/yr. A combination of engine size or car weight with mileage would make more sense...

The state is just trying to get more money since the last transportation bill failed miserably.

After seeing how well the recent 405 projects went, I certainly won't be voting for any more road improvements/taxes.

This potential law makes total sense to me.

Here are a few vehicle comparisons I got from the EPA website:

I don't see a big difference in emissions merely from engine displacement.

The trouble is ..most these guys never worked for a living, they went from high school to collage and never ever got a callous on their hand.
They think money is O.T.A. ( out of tin air ) or just raise taxes. They do not understand economics @ all.
Govt does not create, jobs but taxes your efforts so they can live in splendid houses with bennies for the next 4 ever.....

If I'm reading the EPA website correctly and my math is correct, the 2008 Cayman (2.7 5-speed) gives off ~518g of CO2 per mile. That's way off the deep end of the emissions scale.

Incidentally, the Elise has the exact same figure, so it would go from $0 in 2011 to $600 in 2012.

Maybe someone else can check my figures if they're bored.

If they want to save the roads, how about BANNING STUDED TIRES.

So some guy with a 3.6 turbo pays less than some poor sap driving a F-100 because he need it for work? Dumb.

It doesn't have anything to do with emissions and greenhouse gases, it is just another revenue generator.
The Washington voters just recently said NO to ALL the big transportation propasals and taxes.
THEY WANT THAT MONEY.
There is another proposal regarding fuel effeciency standards increasing even before the EPA requirements, sponsored by some of the same legislators.
If these pass the only way to avoid the "displacement fee" is to drive a vehicle that is old enough for restored or vintage license plates that don't need to be renued annually.
So far I'm good on both emmisions and displacment, my newest car is 33 (diesel Benz) and the 37 year old Porsche, both with original plates. HA!!!

Thanks John

But wait, I thought that we passed the $30 car tab initiative.

Maybe the massive state surplus for the past few years is just not massive enough.

Greedy greedy politicians.

They've been milking the "emergency gas tax" for massive money for years.

$30 tabs - overturned, again and again.
A stadium voted down, but people taxed for it anyway.
"emergency gas tax" put in place as a work-around of process.

....yeah, a "Representative Democracy" ....suuure.

How noble an effort on the part of our state senators. I wonder what these people drive or if they struggle to put food on their tables?

Thanks John for posting.

All the best!
