72T coupe value?

i'm trying to establish a price for a 72 T coupe i may be selling. runs fine, has a weber conversion. looks like an old PMO weber kit w/aluminum manifolds and watersheds. engine type # relates to the proper 2.4 T designation, but supposedly has been upped to 2.7 with E cams. minor clutch shudder, trans shifts fine, occasionally a tick from 1st to 2nd if shifted fast. very clean and straight, looks rust free. hood repainted, but no siogn of any wrecks, gaps even, brown color, interior darker beige w/black dash and door tops and older recaro fabric seats in black. dash looks good w/very small crack in usual place. S calipers. good tires and normal fuchs. and.... factory power windows that work fine. oh, one issue, it was a non-sunroof coupe and someone put in a pop up moon roof. doesn't look too bad, but kind of annoying that someone would do that. fix would be to butt weld in a panel from a parts car, paint roof and replace headliner.

The moon roof is kind of a bummer. Without seeing the car, I would put it somewhere in the $12-$15K range. I've seen really nice T's fetching low $20's, but that is either pristine original on one end of the spectrum, or very heavily modified on the other. I think low to mid teens for an average car is reasonable these days, for a '72 anyway. The fact that it's a '72 adds some value over other T's. Anyway, that would be my guess. That and five bucks will get you a cup of coffee (in Seattle these days...)

Sounds like a nice clean example:

The good - no accidents, no big rust issues, original engine/trans, and the car has not been overly modified.

The bad - brown color (sorry, I had to say it), and the pop-up moon roof.

It sounds to me like John is trying to decide if it is worth the improved sales $$$ to fix the roof. Not having seen the car, I would say that the overall presentation of this car is going to be important. Does it look good? Or is the interior a little ratty, with wires hanging down under the dash? Is the trunk area clean and tidy? Or messy and disheveled with the fuse box a nightmare of tangled wires?

If this car is clean and presentable, I'd say the fixed roof would add a lot more interest in the car, if not add some value. I think Jeff is correct on the value - $12 to $15k depending on the items I have mentioned above. If it's clean, and you want $15k, fix the roof. Of course a brown car may not fetch top dollar either way.

Kinda agree with Jeff and Rex....Besides the Moon Roof, it sounds like the induction and power windows take away from it being original. AND, it could need a clutch soon?

Locally, it won't bring a lot, but to get top price, advertise (Ebay?) in Europe or Australia....

power windows are factory original. interior is not ratty. the recaros aren't that bad, but stock seats are not hard to come by. some folks might like that moon roof.

$12k - 15k sounds about right to me. Good luck! Another plus is that the sellers credibility is top notch!

Good point John - but the $15,000 question is whether that person is the same person that would be looking at a mostly original early Porsche with carbs and an early 70s color. I'm thinking the color makes your list of buyers small, and the moon roof makes the list smaller yet. Why not put the car up for sale like it is, and see what happens? You can always change the roof if the right buyer doesn't come along right away.

Wasn't aware power windows were an option that early. Thanks John. I have a 69 to restore and one of the boxes of spare parts has many power window switches. They don't go back to '69 do they??

RussianBlue's '72 has power windows, and they are listed as original on the records for that car.

Little known piece of trivia is that some race cars ran them, purely because they are actually lighter than the crank up windows. Go figure.

Hey Rex.....easy on the colour bashing.

It is a colour that grows on you. Either love them or hate them. I happen to love them.

The car looks great in the pic.

Cheers.

It seems like if someone has to stick their foot in their mouth, I end up leading the way. Seriously - one of my favorite cars, that always goes to breakfast with us at the XXX, is brown. I love the early 70s colors. Just sayin that brown is probably the hardest color to sell........I'm just the first one to say what everyone was thinking.

Just poking fun at you Rex. You are right, the unique colours do have a narrow market.

Look forward to see you and the rest of the XXX gang on our next trip down.

Cheers.

That's not just brown, that is the infamous Sephia brown. I owned a 72T targa in Sephia, and Charlie is right, you either hate it or love it - there's no middle ground.

6 years ago in Monterrey, I test drove a silver '72 T with a well worn 2nd gear synchro, very clean, tight motor, no sunroof, no power windows, vinyl interior and the guy wanted 15 large for it. I thought it was a bit overpriced then but now one would be a bit hard pressed to find a nice one for that price (except for the moon roof). I would start at 18 so you have some negotiating room.
