What's up Jeff Higgins?
I washed the car today.
Well, it was only supposed to be a wash, but I went a little overboard. First I washed it. Then I saw paint discoloration that would buff out. So I did a little buffing by hand with some 3M. Which made that area whiter once the wax had been removed... So.,.I decided to strip the entire car of wax with the Porter Cable and rewax. Once done stripping, I did another quick wash to remove all the dried buffing compound.. Then I clayed the car. Then I washed again, because the clay lube likes to streak. Then I dried, then I waxed. As I was buffing the wax, I started going to town on the rain gutters with a Q-tip because they're hard for my fat fingers to reach into, to get a little blob of dark crap out of the corner.... At that, exact moment, my wife comes out and sees what I'm doing. Without missing a beat, she says "What's up, Jeff Higgins?" ![]() Hearkening back to the box of Q-tips we gave Jeff after the Concours last year.... Five hours after I started, I pulled the car back into the garage...still not satisfied.

Jeff is in Mexico City for at least a month for a 767 pickle fork replacement.
I'm sure he brought Q-tips with him though.

It is sort of an inside joke about the Q-Tips. If you weren't there or do not know the story, then the joke really doesn't make sense.
I think Jeff will be back within a couple of weeks, as it sounded like he had a shorter stint there than others that went with him. At least that is what I gathered in our last conversation the day before he left.

Last year there was a Concours out in Kirland. Huge gathering of impressive, perfect cars. I found Jeff's car in the Porsche section in all it's imperfect well-loved glory. Jeff, in a concours event? Who woulda thunk it... ![]() My wife and I gave Jeff a box of Q-tips after that...

Wolf,
Your Carrera is a Grand Prix White (same as my 968), isn't it? That's the saga with that color, which is pure white when it's fresh. Once you start buffing, you can't stop...unless yuo want to the whole car. At least that's my excuse for not keeping my car perfect ;-)

Jeff' in Mexico City? Damn I was there last week.
I check in on you guys once in a while.
![]() BTW, if you want to kick some AutoX A$$, come on out here to Chicago. In my first event since I left Kirkland a year ago, I got second in class (3.0l - 3.2l, including Boxters) in a regional competition for Chicago, Milwaukee, and central Wisconsin. You guys who saw me AX in Bremerton know how crappy I am around the cones!

![]() Just got back from beautiful Mexico City. Haven't had time to get the Q-tips out yet, though - still have to get that darn motor back together.

Yeah, just imagine the value of a busload of Boeing engineers and mechanics. It would have been a big windfall for anyone who did it.
Mexico City is truly a scary place once you get away from the tourist districts. If I were home, and therefore able to be armed, I would never venture into areas like those surrounding the airport unarmed. Actually, I would probably just never go there at all. No reason to. Some of the most desperate, impoverished, trod upon people I have ever seen in my life. Very, very sad.

yes it is sad what has happened down there.
back in high school @1985, the family took a trip to Saltillo,Mex. just a little south of Monterrey, maybe 1/3 of the way to Mexico City. nice industrial city in the mountains, filthy air but the old part of town where we stayed was very nice. supposedly there was a big inactive volcano outside of town but i don't remember ever getting to see it thru the orange sky. mom and dad had been there in the 1960's and other than the bad air, they said it hadn't changed much in 20yrs. who knows what the area is like now. definitely 3rd world charm there then. we had no issues till we got back to El Paso, TX USA, when our cameras were stolen out of the hotel while we were at dinner. even Juarez, Mex. wasn't too bad walking around back then. took the old VW bus on that trip don't remember any issues other than it took a while to get thru Mexican customs, since non of us had a passport but you didn't need one back then. getting back into the USA was a piece of cake, we didn't have much to declare. my aunt and uncle used to go down for archaeological digs all the time in Mexico by car, but since they finally retired i don't think they have been back for a few years.

Hey Val, good to hear from you. How are things down in that hot, dusty desert?
The motor was together and running, for awhile. Turns out that I was sent 10.5:1 compression pistons when I ordered 9.5:1's, and the result was some severe detonation. I've got it torn down again, awaiting parts with which to repair it. Hopefully in the next week or two. And hopefully I don't get sent out of country again any time soon. Oh, by the way (so as to not totally hijack Wolfe's thread) I did pick up some invaluable tips on concours prep from the Mexican cab drivers...
