2 stage over single stage ?
I spent a lot of time prepping this car only to screw up the finish coat:mad:I was trying to restore to its original color-Sapphire Metallic and I used DuPont Centari acrylic enamel, single stage. Very difficult to work with in a metallic color, I found out.Lots of flat spots and uneven color. My question is: can I wet sand the paint on the car then use a base-clear over it? What base-clear is compatible? Thanks!

First off...I'm not a professional painter but I've worked with a few on a number of occasions over the past 30 years and have painted a handful of cars myself. I've had experiences with acrylic enamel lifting and peeling when overcoated by an incompatible paint, most notably, acrylic laquer. If I were you, I would wet sand it out and repaint with Centauri again to avoid any possibility of incompatability. Use the sunroof as a practice panel to hone your technique and equipment. You can read my thread (What the Hell am I Doing Wrong) from around the beginning of May regarding the problems I was having getting a good finish using acrylic enamel, and the solutions. Just a note, metallics are harder to paint regardless of the paint system (in my opinion and experience).
If you do decide to respray using B/C, test it on the sunroof first to make sure the Centuari doesn't lift or peel. jmd_forest |
Thanks, Jmd, I think I will give it another go with the single stage... it's too risky the other way, and I've had enough, already!
