Clear coat "chipping" off

... or at least that's what it looks like.

I bought the car a few months ago - an 86 951. Here's what it looks like:

What it looked like when I bought it was small rock chips filled with white stuff, which I assumed was leftover wax, so I pressure washed it - and found the clearcoat was peeling off, bigtime. Small chips probably doubled in size from the pressure washing.

In some of the chip areas, you can see where the clearcoat has lost adhesion and big pieces are ready to flake off; other areas, it appears that it's still bonded to the paint.

I'm wondering what my options are. Can this be repaired? The more I pressure washed, the more came off - so I stopped. I'd normally think you'd take off everything that's loose, then re-clearcoat it. But it just seemed to go and go...

The balance of the car's paint is in pretty good condition (outside the areas that would have seen rock chip damage). It was pretty well oxidized when I got it, but I clayed the car then polished it (Pinnacle XMT Ultra Fine Swirl Remover on a Porter Cable 7424) and it now looks pretty decent.

Any ideas?

It sucks to see that! The poor adhesion of the clear-coat, is a problem that many have. To really correct, it will need to be resurfaced to get rid of the faulty clear finish, and to prep the surface for new paint, either single stage or duplex. If the baseline defects are not corrected, the clear lifting, will continue. Good luck with it!! Tony.

Was the original a two stage paint or did someone shoot clear over the old paint to try and dress it up?

If I understand you correctly, you're saying there is no "fix-it" solution, which is I guess what I expected. What I was hoping for was some kind of sealer and then re-clear coat the problem areas.

As far as I can see, this is the original Porsche paint.

I think what I will do is to pressure wash it again and knock off as much loose paint as I can, then after it's dried a few days and I've gotten off everything I can that's even remotely loose, I'll spray clearcoat on the damaged areas.

If it doesn't look good after that, I'll just buy a bra and call it good. I'm not ready to re-paint the entire car now - a bra would hide 99% of the damage. Not a great solution, but still okay.

Its worth a try as long as you don't have to do the whole hood. I was asking about the original paint being a base/clear because you cannot get the base coat to shine like in the pic. It will always be dull no mater what you do until you clear coat it.
