Removing the wings/fenders for a repaint

I'm just doing some background work before I strip and prep my car for a repaint and I have 2 questions:

1. The rubber gasket where the fender meets the flat panel just below the windshield. I've seen a couple of repaints where this has been masked and it's always been obvious it was masked. My question is this: does the fender have to be removed completely or just loosened off in order to remove said gasket?

2. Secondly, what's the best way to prep areas that are difficult to strip/rub down i.e front of door shuts? And would one prime these areas or just topcoat them.

In an ideal world the whole thing would be media blasted and it wouldn't be an issue, but I'm not looking for a concourse paint job, but it will be glass out and stripped down.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Adam , for question 1 no you can remove the fender beading by removing the upper fender bolts . its more difficult to reinstall the beading (gasket) put some white grease on it and this will make it slide in with less work . that flat panel in front of the front glass is called a cowel panel . as for question #2 would you be talking about the door checks that hold the door open ? i would have to see what that area looks like to gave my views on that . but i would guess that sealer and paint would be ok . i would media blast only if there is alot of paint ( if repainted a number of times ) that needs to be removed or for rust .

Thanks for the reply. That's good news about the beading.

Yes I am talking about the door check area. There doesn't appear to be any rust there and the existing paint appears to be in good condition. So a good clean before repaint will do then.

I'm not sure how much paint is on the car really. I have found spots of the original colour (bahama yellow), which someone has resprayed a not particularly nice Rose metalic.
