floor metal thickness QU

well, I need to replace the rusted out floor pan and rear trunk pan on my 71 914. I don't have that much dough, so replacement ones are out of the queston, so i'll have to make my own, i have read a few books about this and it seems something that i can tackle. My queston is what size steel should I use for the pan, and possibly any tips from anyone who has accomplished this?
