3½ years of work in about 4 seconds...
My '65-built 912 restoration project is really getting close to completion! It doesn't seem like it's been 3½ years since rolling that rusty, wrecked but all original 912 into my shop, time sure flies when you're having fun...
With the installation of the windshield and rear window yesterday, the body restoration is officially done! ![]() I like to install the emblems as the very last step once it's ready to drive, like the christening! I'm having the interior redone by a professional while I'm rebuilding the engine in parallel so driving it by June doesn't seem that unrealistic! The word and photo count in the project blog just continues to grow: http://www.darrylsgarage.com/912/912.htm |

Darryl,
Great job! My 14 yo son has bought a 912 (that I got for $300 in Tacoma), and has been reviewing your posts. We start on it this summer! Who is going to do the interior? Steve at "Classic" around the corner from Jack,...or??. cheers, Eric

Truly fantastic workmanship bringing that one back from the brink Darryl, we need more people with your level of commitment to preserving these early cars!

Well, it should be obvious I'm a man with waaaaay too much time on his hands but as I tell my friends, my car projects keep me out of the casinos, taverns and titty bars!
![]() I'm always pleased to see that my website is of value to you guys. I know at minimum it shows the scope of work required to actually remove all the rust in one of these old SWB cars. I have learned much about metal working and engines in the course of this 912 project and feel quite confident that the work quality of the 356C I'm going to restore next will be higher and my out-of-pocket cost lower because of it. Like all my other restorations, driving them is reserved for sunny days that my schedule is open so I can go out for at least a couple hours on the twisty roads in the Cascade foothills around here. Rainy days, stop-and-go traffic and parking lots are reserved for my 3-D (Dirty, Dented, Disposable) 2007 Honda CR-V! With all the sweat equity I have in these cars, I realize that I couldn't enjoy them from prison after killing somebody with my bare hands for running their shopping cart into one of them!

AAhhh! Can you change the name of this thread?! I had a mini heart attack at my desk when I read the title and then saw your name next to it. I thought the unspeakable happened!
It's a funny thing when you've breathed new life into an old car. They may no longer be something you just pop into whenever you need a jug of milk (assuming they were road worthy to begin with), but you enjoy them on a much different level. I enjoy every update. Keep them coming. Tim K |

Beautiful work Darryl. Like others, I've been following along through it all and have found it very inspirational (particularly the non-car related stuff). Thanks for sharing.

Advice
Darryl, do you have any advice or point me to any information regarding body panel alignment. My car is in the shop right now getting ready for paint. All the panels came off and were repaired but they are struggling with with the body gaps. The car is a 73 targa with all the original panels.
What would you recommend as the steps. Thanks, Joe |

Ah! Bahama yellow! You could park it in my 'Porsche bathroom' and it'd completely blend in with the walls! Best color in the world . . . in my completely useless opinion. Nice car. Now go do another.
