I have purchased a 1968 912 from the 3rd owner who lived 5 miles from my house. Car is fairly solid but will need pans. Car came with original window sticker, books records, and all tag receipts from previous owners. Numbers on car and books match both body and engine. All options on window sticker are with the car including factory A/C. Car has sat for 10+ years. The PO was a Porsche mechanic at one time. He rebuilt the engine 10 + years ago with Mahle P/C, new crank and new Solex split shaft carbs. VIN:12820385. That A/C unit looks cool! Nice find.

It would be interesting if you could scan the AC manual if you have it with the records.

I have the complete ac install manual and it is like new. I scanned the cover only so far but will def. scan the entire piece and post it up when i get a chance. still trying to keep the wife and work happy if you know what i mean since purchasing a new/old car.

It is a thermometer, been there a long time. Do not think it is factory tho?

How can you tell if a fender and door are for a 68 vs. other years? A guy I know has what he believes is a 68 DS fender and PS door shell he wants to sell.

The fender is easy. '68 was a one year fender. If a US car, it would have two holes for the side reflector, no flair (started in '69) and four tabs in the headlight bucket for mounting the headlamp unit. The turn signal bucket is also solid like the earlier cars and not open like in '69.
Doors are basically the same.

jt912, that helps a lot. Are these fenders hard to come by? Should I buy it and the door shell if the price is right?

Here are pictures of the NOS '68 fenders that came on my car.

It is hard to tell from these but I am told that the inner fender lip is curved; meaning that the inner lip starts wide at the bottom and arcs in to be thinner at the top. I was told that this was to accommodate larger tires.

I was also told that these are valuable (not a selling point) as they are one year only as stated above. They would be valube to a person that has say, a 1968 911s that was being restored. The value I was told was $2500 for the pair, I have no data to support that, just what I was told.

I am sure you all have way more info on this than me, but I trust the person that gave me this info and the car.

I went back and read above post....I do not have the reflector holes, but was told that these are NOS, the sticker is still on one...

The only different is the holes for the side reflectors on the fenders for the 68 cars. My original 66 has the same wide at the bottom and thinner lip at the top. Some folks have rolled the lip in to accommodate wider tires.

NOS (New old stock) fenders can be quite expensive. However, there are still a lot of used original fenders out there. Most 68's had their holes filled. Because it was a US thing only. The factory then designed the 69 parking and tail lights to rap around so they could be seen from the side.

So what is a good used fender worth? I also have a door shell.

You can buy good used fenders all day for under $500. I have a pair that I'd sell for $500. There are quite a few '68 fenders out there. Seems like '68 is a popular year for projects and parts cars. Most '68 fenders do have a lip that seems tapered, wider at the bottom and thinner at the top.
Doors are also plentiful. The most valuable part of the door might be the window frame if the chrome is good. If it is a '68 and has the '68-only panel without a speaker hole cutout and a good door pocket that is also a sought after part. I wouldn't pay more than $100 for a complete door.
Depending on price there is money to be made, just a serious pain to deal with shipping if a local buyer isn't found. Check Ebay for prices and look at some Porsche salvage yard sites also.

As mentioned the '68 front fenders are a one year only fender.

1. No flairs
2. Four tabs in the headlight bucket for the DOT units
3. Wide 2-screw horn grills
4. Solid turn signal buckets
5. Tapered lip on inside of wheel well

The mounting holes for the side markers are often filled in and not identifiable.

1968 had one of the largest production runs of all the years so there is really no shortage, accept when you need one. The $500 for the pair is a good price.

Not sure about the wires. The blue do not look factory. Could have been for an alarm, relocated electric fuel pump, or a radio.
The grill definately can be restored. The bars will pop off with gentle pressure. A couple hours of attention and you can bend them back to a shape that matches the contours of the engine lid. With the bars off, the mesh grill will also come off. This is a good time to clean things and maybe paint the parts black again. Easiest to polish the aluminum bars while they are off.
The missing bar is another issue.

The blue wires are what is used to power the a/c fan. the two unpluged wire ends are definitely factory but not sure what they are for. If anyone has one bar please let me know.

That is a one year only 69 grille.
