911 gap between hood & smile

Hi guys,
I have a gap in between the hood and bumper smile(size that can fit through my baby finger in the center). Car is 88 Carerra with no known front accident. Hood, bumper and fenders alignment seem perfect.
I tried to play around with the hood, latch and lock. They seems to do nothing to better the gap. The rubber smile looks perfect as well.
What else should I try? Any suggestions?
Thanks....Steve

Looks like someone has been sitting in the middle of the smile and may have pulled one or more of the mounting screws loose. They may even be missing.

You need to look at the underside of the hood latch area inside the trunk and you will see the screws that hold it in place. they may be pulled out or just loose. The two that hold the center section in place are very easy to see, one on each side of the latch, way underneath inside the trunk.

Hi Sailchef,
I didn't know the mounting screws are inside the trunk behind the latch area. I was think of dropping the bumper(a big job) to see where the problem is.
I'll try to locate the screws tomorrow under daylight. Thanks for the advice....Steve

Yes, the smile screws attach inside the trunk area and also underneath the fender lip on each side. To see them in the trunk area you will be bent over and your head will be resting on the spare tire. May be easier to remove the spare tire and jack etc.

The screws on the fender lip seem to look OK from the picture. The smile sits a little higher in the back.

The mid section of your smile looks like it has had some force applied and flattened it out. Right where someone would be sitting while working inside the trunk.

It is very obvious in the first photo you posted.

Hi Sailchef,
You were dead on. The 2 screws in the centre were off. The 2 side ones were OK. I managed to put them back in proper position. Now it is straight and aligned properly with the trunk. Not sure what happened that caused this.
Many thanks for your tips. Saved me time trying to remove the bumper. Now I'm in love with my Porsche again!
Much appreciated....Steve
