71-72 roof on an 85 911

I'm looking to replace my 85 sunroof roof with a non-sunroof roof. I located an71 or 72 (not sure of the year). Queston is will it fit? Plans are to cut it at the pillars and reweld.

Just a thought, but I thought I had always heard cutting and welding the pillars on a 911 was a really bad idea, that is if I understand your intentions. Someone more experienced in bodywork hopefully will comment, but I believe the correct method is to section out a piece of the roof sheet metal and very carefully fit the curve, scribe and cut. Then carefully tack and then slowly fill in the weld alternating around the patch. Grinding, hammer and dolly work should be necessary to keep it looking like a curved roof and not a bubble. I would think if you attempt to cut the pillars, you're more likely then not to have problems with proper alignment of the windows and windshield-8 in total pieces-not to mention you probably can't weld properly the inner, multilayer sections of the box pillars?

You are not cutting the windshield post, but only removing the outer skin just about 3" down and redoing the spot weldings where the top of the windhshield sits, unfolding the raingutter and again a small weld area around the rear window. Jim
