Proper bonding adhesive BMW R1100S panel
Hi guys,
My first post here. Fun forum, I've been enjoying it. Question is in relation to a BMW R1100S Boxer Cup Replika, but the can satisfactorily be generic as long as I come up with a suitable solution. I have to bond the bracket below to the side panel. It's snapped cleanly off the panel it was mated to at the factory. All the adhesive they used is still firmly affixed to the bracket and snugs right back into place. I haven't ground it off as yet, waiting for your answer. Bracket: It attaches to this point on the panel: The bracket itself is plastic, but the (very hard) bonding agent the factory used is still firmly affixed to it. I was going to grind all the original hardened adhesive off but decided to wait until I'd heard from the experts on materials sourcing and any techniques I should consider. Thanks in advance! Hi,
probably the plastic is ABS. I used two way to repair ABS on my classic BMW R65 bike: -put some ABS granulate (or small parts of Lego blocks, or parts of mobile Phone covers) in a small can with cover together with acetonee. After a few hours or a day (depends on the size of the parts you used), the plastic will completely be solved in the acetone and you will get a kind of a "ABS putty". prepare the "weld" comparable to weld preparation for metal parts. Apply thin but many coats of this stuff. It has to be thin because the acetonee has to evaporate completely without creating vacuoles. -To merge ABS parts, you can use a soldering iron to meld both parts together. A combination of both methods will also work very well. André |
