media blasting euro 931 restoration
hello all,
I am restoring a pretty rarer '79 euro 931 (924 turbo) and at the stage where I would like to have it stripped before sending it to a paint shop. This car was equipped in europe with factory Carrera Gt body work...some is the flexible urethane stuff, some is fiberglasss and of course the main body is steel...though the doors seem to be light weight steel with no sound deadening inside. The car is a bit of a mystery and there is a high possibility that is a factory test mule based upon my research...but this is not confirmed yet. Anyway, what would be best to strip these varying parts with? Will Aluminum oxide if used on the steel parts damage the original factory zinc coating? will it be too aggressive for the fiberglass and urethane pieces? is soda blasing a better option? The car has seen what has clearly been a number of german winters...so there is some surface corrosion that I would like blasted away is soda not aggressive enough for surface rust and minor pitting? thanks, Paul

any blasting will remove the galvinized coating as it less that one mill thick .
use a plastic media to blast the steel body parts and soda on the what is called soft parts . soda will not remove the rust or corrosion on steel so you will have to have the car blasted with both medias . i worked at porsche AG during the time of this cars build . they scrapped all test cars or kept them as they are cars with out vin numbers . there was only a hand full if factory built 931 race cars it could be one but all you have to do is look up in the porsche registry to see there are all accounted for . |

Hi,
thank you for your reply. So I should stay away from aluminum oxide? I can't seem to find anyone blasting plastic media near me...all seem to be soda or aluminum. I wonder if there is some restrictions in New York on the type of media...the blaster using the aluminum oxide told me that sand has been banned (what else is new in NY they ban everything!) maybe plastic too?? I would be interested in hearing your insight into Porsche operations during the period this car was built. My car shares many of the same attributes as chassis 93A0150562 which is one of the GTS prototypes. If you are interested I can PM you my research and findings on this car. What I can tell you now is that due to changes in German privacy laws Porsche is not giving much information out any more...the days of a detailed Cardex are over...just crappy CofA with next to useles info...if any at all. regards, Paul

no they did not out law plastic media blasting in NY .
so is your car a 931 or a 937 they are not the same cars but close . there were very few built by porsche but many were built by other race car builders . porsche did not spend much time with the R&D on the 924 based cars so it's not like there are some R & D test cars just floating around out there . |
