Number of vehicles by color by year?
Hello -
Is there a source to find out how many vehicles were made in a given year for a given paint code? for example - how many 73.5 911 T were in Viper Green? thank you, Peter |

I found a fairly generic article from the early S registry, covers factory data for 1970 and the E & S registry databases. It won't tell you how Viper green 73.5 T were made but you can draw some general conclusions about what percentage of 911's were green from 69-73. I'll be happy to scan article and email a copy to you if you want, PM me your email addy.

this info i have from my years at porsche . vin numbers colors the car was painted and so on .
so the info is out there . some years ago i used to do this for people but it started to become a headache . the info i have starts in paper and then goes to microfiche then to disc thru the years this is how they stored the info. going thru counting what cars were painted in what color is a hell job . the cost in time along to find out one color code and then count the 911's and other model the color was used on takes at times hundreds of hours . then separate out the 911 from the 930 to the 928's add in another 100 hours just for a single color code . for years i have been thinking of doing it . but then what ? do i put it in a book and sell it ? or do i give it ways ? once it's in book form it can be posted and then no need for people to buy it making all my work profitless . this is the reason i have never done it . |

Once you have that data you offer the lookup as a pay service. Each request costs $xx.
It sounds like the challenge is in compiling the data. This seems like something that Porsche would know. Have you seen the marti reports for the mustangs? That gives a breakdown of #'s by options etc. |

yes porsche does to an extent but with a number of porsches color they will bring the color back but assign it a different color code . the color tint for tint is the same but the color code is different .
then how do you break it all down ? would you just add up all the porsche's no matter what model it is that used the code ? would you break it down to say the number of 356's 912's 911;s 930's 914's 928's 944's ????? now it doesn't come right out and state it's a 911 from say a 912 you have to decode that from the vin's on the list's( many lists ) . this is one of the headaches of compiling all the info . sadly the labor hours it takes to the price people would willingly pay are to far apart for me to do it . |

One way to look at it is that you just take the data for what it is and let the values do the talking. You wouldn't want to combine the same colors that have diff codes - the whole point would be to keep the codes separate. If you had all of the data for all years and all porsche models- then you could filter/sort the data anyway you wanted. you could break it down by years and models, or all colors possible, what years had xx color, etc. The data should allow you to sort only by model if you wanted...or find the first vin for each color - heck, anything. As for the VIN- you could have one column contain the full value and then also have columns to break it out by each place and what it means - i would think the tough part would be to align the vin with the color codes - but it all depends on what data you have to start with.
I was able to get the list from my town of all vehicles registered - some of the data doesn't do me any good but it was fun to play with the values to see how many classic cars there are - or how many of a make/model - the oldest car, the most expensive etc - it didn't have any related data back to the owner which was fine as i didn't want that -but you have the data, you can find somebody that wants it. |
