Tin wear 356 v 912 engine swap??????
Hi I have an A engine which has come out of my 356 Pre-A car. The new engine going in is a 912 engine I have stripped it down and cleaned it all up. Now I am about to start to put it in the car. The question I have is which bits of tin wear do I need from the A engine and the 912 engine.
My concern is the side bits of the tin wear look short ????? Which fan housing do I use the A or the 912 one? The J tubes on my 912 engine are shot can I use the j tubes from the A engine ??? Any help would be good Cheers Mark UK the front and back I can see are fine it's the sides and the fan housing and the bits next to the manafolds I have ??? over |

I would use all the perimeter tin from the A engine, as it fits the body of the car. I would also use the "J" tubes and heater boxes from the A as they are also compatible with the body. The 912 fan shroud should be fine and you will also need to use the side pieces from the 912 if you are going to use the solex carburators. You can use the 356 generator on the 912 fan shroud, but if it is a late generator 912 the diameter is bigger and you will have to use the 356 generator stand to use the 356 generator. Virtually all the external parts are interchangeable between the 2 engines including the complete exhaust system.
Good Luck!!

Sorry Mark, can't help you with the clutch, but we have never had problems using the stock 180mm clutchs on 912s in early cars, even with up to 125hp.

Mark-
If you have the 912 Flywheel, send it to Competition Engineering and have them machine the ring gear off and install a 12V (or 6 volt) 356 Ring gear. Then you get the best of everything. The 912 clutch has more surface area than any 356 clutch ever will, and if you have a decent pressure plate you'll have a VERY firm clutch. I did it in my 60' S-90 and every time I let the clutch out it would just about spin the wheels. Good Luck! Robert O
