newbie...356 & vw engine

hello everybody
i have chance to buy '62 356 B roller (no engine), and have some questions, i am a aircooled vw guy, and owner of neverendingresto 911, but i am total newbie in 356. i want to put a vw type1 stroker (2110cc 90,5x82) form one of my bugs, until i find a correct 356 engine. so:

1. is vw engine "bolt on" to porsche tranny? how about width of the 356 engine compared to vw (my stroker is bit wider than stock)?

2.how much hp & torque will 356b tranny transfer without risk of breaknig something? gearing? is this possible to adapt vw swingaxle WITHOUT any mods that can't be undone?

i want do do all mods without cutting, welding etc. and someday make it 100%orginal car.

thanks 4 answers

A vw engine in a 356 is no problem, but there are changes that need to be made. Not sure exactly, but I've seen a chart (I think on Harry Pellows site) that had a breakdown of engine, transmission, etc. and what needs to be used to match them all up. It may be at the Registry's website as well.

As far as running gear, transmission, etc. I'd say that the B is definately better than VW, but if you want real strength and go-get, start thinking about mechanical outlaw and match up a type 4 engine with a C/SC or 901 transmission.

It isn't as hard to find 356 engines as you might think. They are so so much better than any vw motors. My stock 63 tranny easily handles 125 hp.

i have a ca.130-140 hp 2110cc, dual 45 dellorto carbs vw motor, most powerful stock 356 engines are 90? 100? hp, way more expensive to rebuilt/mantain than ac type1 IMHO. it is great that stock tranny could hold this kind of hp! seems like i just decided that my next project will be 356 :) . could you recommend any links to pages with 356 tech articles/vw conversion?

thanks :)

I've had numerous VW monster motors. They just don't rev like a breathed on 356 engine.
