Oil Leak
HI, I have just installed a fresh engine in a 356B. On the engine test bed there were no oil leaks. When the engine was installed, after about 5 minutes running a bad oil leak started from the fly wheel housing area. Sometimes rear oil seals need to bed in, so we told owner to run the car for a period and see if it stopped. The oil leak stopped after a time, but the oil level was down so we added about 1 litre. The oil leak started again. We checked the oil dipper to make sure we were not overfilling, the dip stick is the correct one when compared to other 356 engines. If the oil was coming out from behind the bearing it would not stop with low oil level, it would pump engine dry. If it was a crack in the case it would have been noticed as it would have to be big to allow the oil to leak as fast as this one does. The oil is not frothy, so the cam shaft is not partly covered by the engine oil so it can't be the cam plug. Any suggestions please before we bite the bullet and drop the engine out, thanks. Did that once. It's the flywheel oil seal. After pulling the engine and removing the old seal, check the crank for a slight groove. Put in a new seal slightly deeper or shallower than the last one.
