Lookng for a Speedster

My father recently found the paperwork for his 1957 Porsche 356 Speedster that he owned in the 60's. It was number 82758. Is there any chance that the car could be located? Is there a registry, or an owners association through PCA, or some kind of serial number search?
Is it possible that someone has kept and restored the car, or is it more likely that it's sitting in a barn somewhere? We were just really excited to find the information on his Speedster. He talks about it all the time, and about how he regrets selling it.
