Help with ID'ing a motor and value?
 

Hello All,

I just acquired an old 356 engine that has been in storage for 25 years. The owner was the son of a gentleman that operated an independent Porsche shop in the San Jose area.

The story I got was this was installed in the owners car and was pulled when he sold the chassis. The motor was stored in the fathers shop then passed away.
I would assume it will need a complete tear down and overhaul.

I'm completely ignorant to 356 stuff as I've only been bitten by the 911 and 912 bug (as of yet).

I'm hoping some of you can help me ID the engine and help get me the value of the engine as it sits.

Engine number is: 231045.

Looks like an early 356A. Zenith carbs, thermostat housing in the timing cover, but with a VW generator/regulator. The number you give, though, doesn't come up in the specs book. The closest number is 22999. Might want to check that again. There is a type designation stamped on the top of the case near the seam. That would help to make a clear i.d. It would be well to consider the fact that a lot of older engines are a sort of mix-'n-match, given their frailties. The overall value is probably pretty modest, given the likelihood it will need a complete rebuild to bring it up to snuff.

Could also be a modified industrial engine. What is the engine type? It is on the boss behind the generator stand. 616/3 or something to that nature. Value is dependent on many factors. Does it still turn by hand or is it seized?

I'm still a bit perplexed. There are a few different numbers stamped here and there.


The engine number is definitely 231045.

Then above the engine number is stamped "51"


However, there are few more numbers stamped. 24754 - 1600 (I would assume its a 1600cc motor).


Also stamped is 799.

I know its a bit confusing, but any help would be appreciated.

just curious, was reading about him recently.

This one doesn't look like it has ever been touched by Harry.

Could you post a pic of the actual engine number stamped at the base of the generator stand.

You need to join www.porsche356registry.org and advertise the engine there. You might find the owner of the car that the engine came with. Be a lot more valuable to him/her!
