Another bunny tail; Janis Joplin's 356 Cab

I just ran across pictures of this today on this website:
Janis Joplin's Porsche | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

and a few comments below the picture.
Apparently it was a Reutter bodied 356, not sure if it was B or C.
Wild psychdelic paint job. Was stolen. Thief painted back half in primer.
I'd like to know what year it was, the SN, what it was sold for by Joplin, any other prices it was offered forbefore it became recognized as a collectible.

One source says it is at:

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio. ??
autosvantoen.nl/blog/2011/02/07/psychedelische-porsche

It was also on
History's lost and found tv show on the HISTORY channel
CA license VAN990!

I am not sure if she owned this before or after she recorded the song that said something like "Lord, don't buy me a Mercedes Benz"

'63 T6 B Cabriolet

Wife and I saw the car at Peterson's in LA (Cars & Guitars of Rock-n-Roll display) and I was able to point out to her that all 356s smell like gas when you get within a few feet of 'em

I must make amends

I saw the Cab at a MOMA display in San Francisco a couple of years ago, I was told that when the car was stolen it was sanded and completely repainted a drab color, so the original Psychedelic job was lost.
It was repainted from vintage photographs.

It is usually displayed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, however it was just on loan for a Porsche design exposition in Virginia just recently.

Until January 18th it is at the NC Art Museum in Raleigh. Pretty good exhibit there.

I just wondered what it sold for when Joplin sold it

was it repainted in the psychedelic theme then? One picture I saw of it showed just a little primer on the rear lid so I was hoping they didn't have to repaint the whole car. I wonder if the original artist was available to repaint it? Any opinions on value of what it would be worth with stock Porsche paint theme vs. the psychedelic & famous owner combo?

PS There is a Cobra Mk. III with this same thing--painted psychedelic for an aristo pal of the Beatles, owner died, car repainted dark purple and last sold without the psychedelic theme.

Remembered this car again, after eeading responses, more questions

Still interested in hearing bout this car.
Does anybody know the VIN number?

As far as the repainting, was she the one who wanted it repainted in the wild paint scheme?

Were they able to get the original artist to repaint the car? I originally thought it had only been damaged in one area and primered there but after reading the responses above, it sounds like the whole car was primered by the thief and had to be surrealistically repainted.

There is a Beatles connected AC Cobra that is in the same boat. It belonged to an aristocrat friend of the Beatles (The Right Honourable Tara Browne) who had a wild paint job laid on by two British artists. But Browne died in a Lotus and the Cobra was painted black, later deep purple and lives on today but without the glamor it had when it was an "art" car. (Browne's death is celebrated in the Beatles song "A Day in the Life.") So I think the decision to repaint the Joplin car in the surreal paint job was the right move.

Is it on any of her album covers?

How many years did she own it?

And finally what did she sell it for? I don't know the year she sold it but I assume
that it was still under $10,000 then.

Thanks for any info...

Does anyone have an old ad showing what Joplin sold it for?

Or even a subsequent owner? Did the thief that stole it go to jail?
Don't leave me hangin'...this is a good story.

Read a long time ago that the original went to her family. IIRC brother and sister had it for years. Supposedly repainted before making car show circuit. Heard at one point that there was two cars painted the same but don't remember details...
