Help id'ing an old Lietz roof rack
I'm trying to help my brother out. He's clearing out an old house and came across this Lietz rack Knowing that I'm a porsche guy and Lietz is tied in with older 911 and 356's he was hoping I'd have an idea of what it came off of. Problem is I have no idea. My best guess is an old vw bug but I'm not familiar with older porsches so maybe you guys might have an idea. I'm going to cross post this in the 911 forum also just in case.
These are the only photos I have at this time Thanks for any help you all can provide Dan ![]() ![]()

Looks like an original roof rack for a 356 or early 911. Could be one of the earliest versions available, as I've never seen one before. The later type wing's out (for the lack of a better word) and up on the drivers & passengers side. This later type is being reproduced and the maker has done a fabulous job.
Do you have a car to try it on? Where are you located?? |

Kinda what I was thinking also kecho. I've seen the "newer" style 356 ones but your right, they fold up on different ends then this rack.
I unfortunately don't have a 356 to try it out on. Even the oldest 911 I know of around my area is an 82 and I believe that has the same body/roof line as my 964. I'm in the DMV area (district, maryland, virgina). If anyone around has a 356 or older 911 and wouldn't mind me swinging by and giving it a test fit, it would be much appreciated. |

Looks to be a 60s style VW roof rack. The earlier 356 racks were engine lid mounted and made by Reutter. Lietz didn't make racks for a Porsche until 60/61' again engine lid mounted. Roof racks were borrowed from VW, with Lietz roof racks only appearing on the earliest 911/912 models, 65/66. It might fit a 356 though.
