replacing muffler and heat exchangers

Trying to replace the muffler and heat exchangers on a 1963 356B while the engine is in the car. It looks like it is almost impossible to get to the bolts that attach the exhaust pipes to the engine especially the ones that go thru the heat exchangers.
Any ideas would be helpful.

It takes 20 minutes the get the engine out. I wouldn't even try to do this with the engine in place.

heater boxes

But wait a minute...
Before you do anything, spray all the exhaust stud/nut areas down with some kind of "rust buster" and let it sit a few days if possible.

Muffler and heat exchangers 356

Did it with engine in car. Took reciprocating saw and cut off exhaust pipes and heat exchangers giving easy access to attachment nuts. Soaked them good with acetone mixed with trans fluid, (better than and rust buster) and off they came. Cleaned studs and with new nuts went together easily.
The trick for me was cutting off the old system rather that trying to unbolt it.
