What transaxle is this?
Greetings 911 people. I don't usually frequent this section of Pelican, since I am a 944/951 guy much more than a 911 one.
Can you tell me what this transaxle is for? It says 901 on it obviously, but don't know what that means exactly. From what I can tell, it is completely locked up inside, and we are trying to determine what to do with it. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Flip it upside down and get the type and S/N off the bottom center rib. Lots more information about it with those numbers.

I'm not 100% sure from this angle, but that looks to me like a 911 type 70-71 gearbox and not a '69 only 901. You'll want to look at that attached thread and get some measurements, in particular the throwout tube length. It will either be 40.5mm or 50mm. I think it is the latter.

It does look like a pull clutch setup, ie '70-'71, but read the numbers to be sure.

This is what we found.
porsche transaxle 901/01 7702688, but for some reason the 901 *may* be a 911? Thanks again for the help.

Lemme translate. It's a 901 trans, however, the part transaxle number is probably 911/01
It's for an early pre impact bumper (longhood) 911. Starting in '74 (Edit '71 thanks Bruce!) , they used a new transaxle (the 915) My book doesn't tell the serial number info, but I show a 911/01 being used in 70. Prior to that, I don't see any 901/01, but I see 901/02. So, to summarize, any 63-71 porsche 911 transaxle is usually called a "901" transaxle. Starting in 71 they use a 915 trans. And I think in 87 they moved to the G50. You are probably familiar with Porsche history and the fact that the original 911 was named a 901 but Peugeot had trademark on three digit car numbers with a zero in the middle. Sorry if this is all info that you already know, but in the spirit of someone searching this later, this might spell it out more clearly. I should also say the shift pattern is different in a "915" vs a "901". For a 901, reverse is up and to the left with first below it (dogleg style) and 2nd and 3rd are inline. The 915 has first up to the left and 2nd inline.

The 915 started in 1972, not 1974, with production installation begun about 8/71
The 911/ xx box is 1970/71 with production begun about 8/69 for 1970 production Bruce |

So this is a 911/01 transaxle for 70/71 911, from what I gather above. Correct?
Is there any other info that can be garnered from the SN 7702688? If it follows other 911 transaxles, 7 7 0 means six cylinder, something, and 1970 model year, #2688 (one of the later ones, since the last was 2730). What does that second "7" mean? A friend of mine was looking it up and thinking that it might have an LSD in it, but I'll bet that is wishful thinking. And thanks Duane for the history lesson. I had actually forgotten about that whole trademark thing (see 944 guy, not 911 ![]()

It won’t have an LSD. 95% of them were open diffs.

Don't know why my uploaded picture didn't show. This shows the serial number, confirming it is definitely a 911/01.

The good news is the 911/ trans is somewhat stronger than the older 901. When in good condition they are wonderful smooth shifting transmissions.
The bad news is the clutch release arm was designed to work with the newer 911's pull type pressure plate starting in '70. The pivot for the release arm is best described as Micky Mouse, and was only used for '70-'71. Some have adapted these to older cars, '68-69 with success. Not sure how they modified the release arm pivot mechanism. No one has ever, to my knowledge, come up with a long term solution to the breaking release arm "ball pivot" problem. Don't even think about putting this trans in a '72 or newer. My $0.02
