Silly question: Where are you placing the jack stands for a front suspension rebuild?
Normally I put the jack stands under the front A-arms.
But where is a safe place to put them when you're planning on removing the A-arms? I get nervous thinking about bending a pinch weld.. |
I ended up buying the flat top esco jack stands for this job. Added to the expense a bit but outside of having a lift they seemed like correct solution for a-arm removal.

There is a diagram somewhere on here that shows the lifting points.
I cut a couple small pieces of 2X4 that fit in the flat corners of the pan behind the front wheels. The lifting spot where the threaded hole is. The wood gives it cushion and reduces the chance of denting the pan. |

I use a 6" x 6" piece of plywood between the jack stands and front pan. ('74's don't have the reinforced lifting point). Being somewhat paranoid, I placed the front tires behind the jack stands with a 4x4 laid on top of them just in case.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1545078930.jpg |
Source a length of 2x4 or 2x6 lumber to span the distance between L and right sides, then position jack stands under it. See above photo for front support placement. Careful. Avoid compressiung the oil cooler and/or A/C lines. Additional supports provide comforting redundancy, just in case.

Thanks! Lucky(?) for me, I have neither oil nor A/C lines to crush...

A mental exercise in the middle of the night while trying to get to sleep gave me visions of sistering the bottom chord of a roof truss with a couple 2x6s to reinforce it, wedging a 4x4 post sitting on a suitable Simpson Strong-Tie bracket from Home Depot that's anchored to the garage floor so it won't kick out, slipping another 4x4 beneath the car from side to side with some 2x4 scraps tacked on and judiciously placed to catch the lift point seams, then sticking a couple 2K pound capacity come-alongs on both sides of it, hanging from the beefed up truss and jack the front end up until the roof hits the high ceiling... a homemade gantry crane as it were. Then the vision came to me of a heavy vehicle bludgeoning me to death when it fell from a distance of four or so feet, so I rolled over and went to sleep. Has anyone ever jury-rigged a similar contraption and lived to tell about it? |
