Yet another Conti radio install...Thanks!

Spent a lot of time perusing threads on here and decided to install the Continental TR-7412UB-OR radio. Got a lot of great tips from those threads that saved some time and headaches, so Thank You!

For my install, I wanted to leave the stock connectors under the dash, so I purchased a short ISO harness. It adds some mess and extra connections, but I didn’t have to cut any of the stock terminals off in case a future owner wanted to go back to the OEM Montery SQR23. I also purchased the speaker plug harness to which I soldered a piece of 9/18 audio cable for the speakers. I wanted to get rid of the stock fader for a couple of reasons…I don’t think its needed and it also relies on bonding the speaker ground wires, which the Continental manual recommends against.

My console switch plate was pretty knackered, so I cut out a very thin plate with a new “D” hole for the Fan switch and also a space for a rocker switch where the fader control previously resided. This killed two birds with one stone…fixed the rotating fan switch and gave a discrete switch location for the power antenna. I really only want it to go up when I’m using FM, which is rarely.

For speakers, I took the excellent recommendations found on here and used the Pioneer TS-D1302R Fronts and TS-A4670F Rears. This was really straightforward although the rear deck speakers were solidly stuck to the vinyl backboard and took quite a bit of coaxing to come away.

The sound is better than expected, and more than enough for road trip listening. Love the look of the unit in the dash, as many have noted it’s blends in fairly well. Oh, I also added a low profile USB jack in the console, and may re-make the cover plate to incorporate this for a slightly neater look.

So thanks again for all the great info and resources, it helped everything go very smoothly!

That looks great.

Considering installing one in my SC.

Clean install. Looks good.
Did you use a label maker for the Porsche emblem or?

Quasimoto 03-28-2019 06:59 AM

Ordered it with the headunit… https://www.bergvillfx.com/index.php/products/car-audio.html

Fwiw, I may ultimately end up purchasing the updated Blaupunkt unit assuming it ever makes it to the US, but for now this will work well enough...

I like that phone mount on the ashtray lid - what is it?

Looks good - can you show us your rear speaker install - did you reuse the factory covers? Been perusing all the rear speaker threads.

Quasimoto 03-28-2019 11:07 AM

Didn't take a pic of the rear speakers except the one you see in the first post comparing old to new. As you can see in the pic, my grilles were in great shape, so no issues there. Popped the spacer and adapter ring of the new ones and they fit right under the grilles.

Did this "spacer and adapter ring" come with the speakers - or did you have to purchase separately?

Quasimoto 05-01-2019 02:55 PM

They came with the speakers

Koizumi 05-01-2019 04:43 PM

Are you digging the unit? I like mine with the focals, amp, and under seat sub. My car is loud so I added the mic to the back of the unit and discreetly ran it up to the puffy sunvisor. Works great.

I want to hear opinions about the new Blau once it comes out. Any sound improvement is welcome in my book.

Nice!

High Life 05-01-2019 06:01 PM

Conti TR7412 went in last week - easy peasy

Didn't realize you could run an amp or a sub?

Ordered the Pioneer package tonight..

I have the same head unit and it is really good. Looking into speakers now. Anyone know if the ones outlined by OP will fit an '88 Targa?

a2jon 05-02-2019 06:30 PM

Which cable harness did you buy and where did you get it? I have Conti radio and original radio installed and didn’t want to cut the connectors to install the Conti? This sounds like the perfect solution

You can buy the harness from bergvillefx as well. No need to splice or butcher the original harness. Perfect fit retaining all original connectors.

Now all you need to do is add this handsfree Bluetooth module for music streaming and hands free calling. iSimple iSFM2351 Bluetooth Hands-Free and Audio Streaming for all FM Radios :: Bluetooth. I have one and it works great. No association but a happy user.

Yet another Conti radio install...Thanks!

The Conti has Bluetooth streaming & phone built in already

Quasimoto 05-03-2019 02:11 AM

Yes, it has built-in Bluetooth which was the primary feature I wanted. (besides fixing the broken stuff of course.) Also USB, phone for those that want that.

For some reason it seems stuck on old 80s music when the missus and I take it out for an evening cruise...who says you can’t go back?

jjeffries 05-03-2019 04:06 AM

I love the design of this product line and your installation, incl your A/C panel, is super-sanitary. My only wish is that Conti would include a subwoofer output. John.

7783911 05-03-2019 04:36 AM

How is the usability of the screen in daylight. My head unit doesn’t do reverse display and is difficult to read at a glance despite trying every brightness and colour combo. I am considering replacing because I am anal and this bugs me

Koizumi 05-03-2019 08:07 AM

Daytime and side angle visibility of the display is great.

I added a sub via hi level to rca converter. Yes I woulda preferred Lo-level rca outputs on the back of the Continental but my method works perfectly albeit with a couple more install steps. I have a 4ch amp (to 4 Focal speakers) mounted to the rear of the passenger wood footboard. And I have a powered sub under the passenger seat. All hidden, discrete and sounds excellent.

jjeffries 05-03-2019 02:16 PM

Koizumi, you're clearly operating a higher level of know-how than I am....I must google hi level to RCA converter. I am a dinosaur.
I drove my SC a couple of hundred miles today and quickly remembered what makes it a difficult environment for any stereo: the noise, especially the fan whine. Yes, I know...that's music unto itself...drive my boring modern daily if I want to listen in high-fidelity. Cheers, John

Just finished installing the TS-A4670F Rears - huge disappointment. Turned the Conti up to sound level 27 and the distortion was awful..

I double checked speaker wires (have seats out - straight shot) and its the speakers...

I have had the Conti head unit in for a few weeks now and love the unit. Very simple straight forward.

RWebb 05-11-2019 01:02 PM

I wish the Conti head unit played better with an Iphone...

Quasimoto 05-11-2019 01:20 PM

@highlife - that’s unfortunate...mine seem to sound ok, but I also have the fade set where a lot of sound comes from the fronts. (I’m assuming you eliminated the oem hardware fader?)

@rwebb - what issue are you having? My iPhone connects reliably every time and functions well

I would assume so - I removed the old Blaupunkt and amp components.. Isn't the fader a function of the head unit?

Looking at the Conti instructions - I dont see the fader as an option to change..?

Quasimoto 05-12-2019 02:36 AM

It takes a second to find, but you there is a Fade setting on the headunit...

Page 3 of this PDF - http://www.bergvillfx.com/files/Continental_installationmanual.pdf

High Life 05-12-2019 08:03 AM

Ok - Well I will go out and mess with it - but the page 3 instructions (Bass and Treble) towards the bottom is for a Continental 7416/7418 head unit - the one we bought is the 7412 - we don't have a "right wheel button" ??

In the instructions I got with the unit. It doesn't explain anything about a "Fader" option - although on page 5 it suggests it has one..
