The Turd: no ignition but she turns over.
 

Dad and I played around with Flying Turd today. We still had 2 leaks but 5 minutes later after replacing them we kept her from bleeding.

We hit the starter and she turns over just like I've heard every other early car I've been in. We were getting gas out of the cold start mechanism but we didnt' get any spark and we didnt' get any voltage to the coil. At that point it was too dark to play with it anymore. I'm going to double check the lines from CDI and make sure their right. Anything else I should double check ignition wise?

Sounds like you're making progress. Check and double check all of your grounds. Is the coil new? If it is the coil that came in the car it would be good if you could try one that is known to be good or just pick up a new one. That could be a major weak link. Now that you're nearing start-up i would put an ohm meter on all of the spark plug wires one by one. The Beru plug ends can break in the middle and you would never know it. New plugs, cap, rotor, wires and coil eliminates ALOT of wondering so you can spend time on other things. Before i switched to crankfire i used to make my own plug wires to exact lengths. If you have good wire ends, you can make custom copper core wires cheaply. I still have a spool of wire and the crimping tool/crimp ends. Once you get it fired up and running, i can help you dial in the MFI pretty well.

Good progress Tim. Make sure you have a video camera and/or at least a still camera to document the day she is tuning on her own. You'll look back at those images down the road and be able to relive that magical moment of pride and joy. Good luck!

Tim, if you want it to run, you gotta stop calling it names. :D

you already heard the cd whine. ya? got power to the cd. the plug in is next to the voltage reg. you do understand the nature of the beast. the negative terminal of the coil is always grounded/ the hot signal varies from the cd. not a constant 12v grounded by the points. have you replaced the points? (there is a particular way to hook up a dwell and not smoke the cd. be carefull)

how did the motor sound ? good . no odd mechanical sounds?

pull your plugs. dry them off with a lighter. reinstall them. hold it to the floor and i bet she'll fire.

Thanks paul. I don't have an extra coil but the plugs are new and the cap and rotor have only a couple miles on them. (a little dark but still very new)
What is the tolerance for resistance through the plug wires?

I think I'm going to go through the haynes diagnostic procedures as well.
