Alternator identification/replacement options
I've posted a picture of the alternator that came off my 2.7 engine. Picturer is Alittle blurry.
-This is a SEV Marchal alternator with separate external voltage regulator. -Can someone tell me the amp output of the alt? On the red round sticker on back there is a part number 712 237 02 and also a 14v part number as well. No Porsche part number or any amp part number. -Anyone know if this is a 55 amp or a 70 amp alternator? Also what would be a good replacement. These are no longer available. Would a bosch be a good choice. I've read several posts concerning the Valeo replacements having wiring mods and other issues that have to be addressed. Any info?http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1563913343.jpg |
It is a 55 amp alternator. I'm not sure about what replacement alt will fit your housing.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/727837-older-alternator-fan-housing-1982-911sc.html There is a chart in the post above that shows dimensions by year and amp rating. It may help. |
These are easily rebuldable. Maybe someone can recommend a shop near you.
BTW, I rebuilt one of these myself. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/941604-alternator-bearings-again.html |
My Marchal died on the road and I replaced it with a Valeo from Pelican with minimal tools. The Valeo replacement fits except the plastic air deflector needs to be altered with a file to accept the internal voltage regulator of the Valeo. The Valeo replacement has its own internal voltage regulator so you simply tape the black wire out of the way. The Valeo has a 24 mm nut instead of a 22 so your fan wrench will be the wrong size. The cup washer hole has to be enlarged to fit the larger diameter shaft of the Valeo replacement. If this is not an emergency you can have an alternator shop rebuild your original for probably less money and not have to change anything. Turnaround time on a rebuild is usually just a couple of days.
