Car, '74 911 2.7 CIS with original CDI

I stalled a Pertronix Ignitor 2 model 91867A. I've searched the forum and found some install tips which I followed. The red wire from the Ignitor 2 is connected to the engine bay fuse box to a terminal that is switched on with the ignition, the black wire is attached to the wire that the points were attached to. As pointed out in other posts the rotor does touch the Ignitor magnet which stops the rotor from seating fully, it could go about 0.05" more but doesn't appear to cause and problem with the cap.

Now before I try to start the car I'm trying to static time the distributor with a test light. Not getting the light to light up. I've tried to test for a spark to the light from the points wire (black wire) and at the distributor cap at no. 1 by turning on the ignition and turning the engine over by hand. Any clues to get the ignition to light up the light?

It might be tricky or even impossible to do with the Pertronix 2. Unlike Pertronix 1, it has built in protection to prevent damage to the coil and the pertronix unit if the key is left on while the engine is not running. How this is accomplished, I do not know. I suspect that the circuitry looks for a couple of opening signals before actually switching on coil current, The folks at Pertronix might have a work around for you so you can static time the engine.
The Pertronix 2 will be an improvement over the Pertronix 1 providing you use the coil recommended for it (do not use your CDI coil or the Pertronix 2 will likely fail due to the low resistance). However, even with the Pertronix 2 you are not going to beat the original CDI. Curious why you would want to change that for a lesser ignition system? Fred

The idea is to go pointless. I did not know that the CDI coil would be a problem. Is the ignitor going to override the CDI?

No, I misunderstood what you were doing. The Pertronix 2 should trigger the CDI without any problems. So yes you would keep the CDI coil. The less expensive Pertronix1 would have worked for that purpose too. Fred

Thanks for the info. Perhaps I should have gone with Ignitor 1, I just assumed 2 would be better.

Just fire it up and adjust the timing as needed. Just like it had points. :)
