Targa top problems

In my work restoring Targa Tops I have come across a prevailing theme with the 86-89 Roller latch style Tops. Latch breakage. if one piece fails the top will not work properly. The second generation introduced with the 964 have a much better design.

The roller arm of the top should rotate a little over 90 degrees to lock and unlock. They should not rotate 360 degrees. When this occurs and happens frequently, the top unlatches itself. When this occurs, there is a strong possibility the top will fly-off.

The first design of the roller latch has 25 pieces and if one piece fails the top will not work properly. The second generation introduced with the 964 have a much better design with only 5 pieces. They hold up a lot better.

Targa owners check you latches and if there is a problem new 964 style latches can be purchased. The new version is a direct replacement. email me and I can provide pics.

Thanks, Dan for your sage advice. Because I live in a climate with many temperature changes, my top probably comes off and on more than average, so I'll look closely at the latches. BTW, the top still looks beautiful after you rebuilt it a couple of years ago!
