Fuel overflow tank
Had a horrible fuel smell in the garage and found fuel dripping from beneath the left fron fender. Thinking that the lines to the fuel overflow tank were bad or the tank itself had failed I pulled it out but everything seems to be fine with the exception of a fitting on the tank with nothing attached. Anyone know what is supposed to be connected here?

If i remember correctly there is a metal tab/bracket in the fender well that that fitting slides into to help support the tank.

That is a fuel expansion tank. I believe that hole is where the fuel vents to the atmosphere.
If you overfill your tank, the fuel drips straight down to the floor. Mine does. |
76FJ55, I don't think it fits into a bracket. The fitting is on top of the tank and wasn't connected to anything when I took it out.
mo-mon that's exactly the problem I'm having, although I've owned this car for 15 years and never had this happen before. I guess while I have everything torn apart I might as well replace the fuel lines. Could be cracks that aren't visible that are leaking, Thanks for the replies. |
Hi Barrpete- The fitting you have shown fits into a u-shaped metal bracket that holds the tank in place above the washer tank. I have a few shots from my removal... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/987971-weak-washer-system-solved-mold.html It's actually a clever way to keep the upper portion of the expansion tank in place- just look for/feel for the u-shaped clip in the upper portion of the wheel well.

Missed Approach, great write up. I must have missed it in my searches because its mainly about the washer tank, but your writeup covers both - thanks!

Hi Barrpete- Thanks for the kind words! I still can't fathom how all the road debris made it behind my vapor tank.
|
Ha! I think my car will be about 20 lbs lighter after all the dirt that come out of there!

Can anyone confirm the size of the fuel lines? It looks like the smaller line is 4x1.5 mm and the larger one is 9x2.5 mm. Pelican doesn't seem to carry either of these sizes, anyone know where to source them?

Hi Barrpete- I recently replaced some of the lines (which are 9x2.5mm).
Here's a a bit of my story... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/1043707-expansion-tank-fuel-smell-quandary.html |
Hi Barrpete- One update- Hose #13 on your tank is a smaller diameter- It's a 4 X 2.5 under Part #N0203612...
