Mothers to the rescue
OP here. Special thanks to Spyerx and Autoclub911 for the suggestion to use the Mothers Aluminum Wheel Cleaner. It arrived by post today as I couldn't find it locally, and ran to the garage. Sprayed it on the stained anodized area, let it sit for 10 minutes or so with an occasional light, light brushing with a very soft bristle brush. Lo and behold, the wheels were like new. Again, thanks for the suggestion.

Another vote for Mothers
I have original Fuchs that were restored3 years ago and changed to a RSR finish. I have tried 5-6 wheels cleaning solutions and techniques with marginal success. Often a strange “haze” would remain that I could not get out for the life of me.
Wish I had taken before photos but here is the finished product:http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1582140197.jpghttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1582140273.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1582140273.jpg |
Nice. Just ordered a bottle from Amazon.

I got the mothers which helped a little, but they are pitted and really need to be stripped completely. Question - how well did Mothers work on your inner barrels or did you not tackle?? I've read a few places about using oven cleaner (containing lye) to really get them down to the aluminum. I'm not clear if thats a step before sanding?? Any thoughts? |
There are a couple of issues that need to be addressed. You need to determine what finish you have on your wheels now if they have been refinished. Is there any finish on the aluminum, as a clear coat (urethane), paint, or anodizing like the factory used? Or are they bare aluminum.
What are you trying to achieve? Those wheels look OK in your picture. Perhaps a close up shot of your wheels and area of concern. The true RSR finish, it is my understanding, had no finish but the aluminum was bead blasted which gave it the dull finish. There are a number of aftermarket methods to get the RSR look. Oven cleaner will remove anodizing and leave a dull gray finish which will need to be polished. |
Thank you Gordon, you answered my question on the results of 'oven cleaner'! 3 of my wheels are polished (and quite pitted), 1 wheel is unfinished and cleanup with with Mothers.
