911 Ref and Speed Sensors
 

I have seen a number of posts from a few years back about the speed and ref sensors.
Everywhere I look at replacements it shows the male plug attached to the sensor.
When I unplug mine the wire from the sensor is a female type.
What am I missing?

Going from memory, here, but pretty sure your picture is of the harness side of the connector.

I have some other pictures, maybe I am under a wrong impression but
In my mind the cables that come through the firewall from the sensors are in
the left side of the engine bay then they connect up to a bracket in the engine bay and they go off to the other side of the engine bay.
I wish I could figure out how to add those pictures to this thread

Your three sensors in the bracket are Cylinder head temp., speed and reference.
The factory setup is the the LEFT hand side is your vehicle's wiring harness and the RIGHT hand side is the sensors themselves.

That second picture looks like the sensor side of the plug connected cracked off and stayed inside the chassis/harness side of the plug

The reference sensors are all the same as shown in your first picture. Don’t worry about buying the wrong plug because they all have the same plug designation as mentioned by Cubieman

Just be sure to buy the BMW sensor and not the Porsche sensor. Porsche sensor is needlessly more expensive because Porsche. Many of us have used the BMW part number and can confirm it is a direct fit with no modifications necessary and works perfectly. Part number is 12-14-1-708-619-M14 here on the pelican site. Both the Porsche 3.2 and some BMW models of similar vintage use similar Bosch Motronic fuel injection systems and that’s why the sensors interchange

Definitely get the BMW sensors like KTL said
Also I would suggest to replace both speed and reference sensors while you are down there. I actually wish I would have done the CHT sensor as well just because but I cheaped out.

I looked again and the center of the socket cracked and stayed on the plug making it look like the gender was opposite. I was starting to think I was seeing things.

So I managed to get the speed and ref sensors both loose and can pull them out of the bracket but the top sensor is blocked by 3 wires and a square looking grommet.
I don't want to be pulling those wires about but I don't want to be removing the grommet if it's never going to go back in. The only other way seems to be taking off the Bracket which is another thing all together.

Any suggestions would be welcome

Pry out the grommet . It comes with the head temp sensor. The ref wires have to go through it anyway. Silicone spray to get it back in. BMW # 12 14 1708 618. Don't take the bracket off or you will have to reset the clearance on the lower sensor.

Appreciate the information, I have both sensors but hopefully the temp sensor is OK. Boy that bad boy is expensive.
I did find another thread about this so its soaking in armorall for the night.
The connections on the bracket are messed up, hopefully I can work those

Back to the Rubber Grommet.
Got it out after a fight, got my new sensors in and all that's left is the Grommet.
This thing is a real bear, can only get my left hand to the thing and it's just not wanting to get back in the hole.
Until I get it started there's just no way to pry anything with just one hand.
Is there a trick to this
