Hack LHD > RHD conversion

So, I've been working on my car for about 1.5 years now. Rebuilt engine, rebuilt transmission, electrics in progress and a whole bunch of other repairs that I'm doing for my car. (so much for an oil change and off she goes!).

I'm in the process of installing new fuel hardlines through the tunnel (see my other thread). The previous owner installed crappy carpet that was flopping all over the place, so I ripped it out, along with the pedal board in order to see what was going on in the tunnel better. Sometimes you should just leave things alone - this is what I found:

Not pretty, is putting it nicely.
Also, the shafts that run from the pedals into the tunnel practically rub on the floor.
It's stuff like this that makes people want to avoid steering swaps like the plague.

How can I fix this? i'm not even sure how it's supposed to look here. Is there a tunnel cut that I can use to neaten this whole area up?

I'm thinking I'm doing to remove the whole pedal assembly clean it up and wire wheel this whole footwell area to see what other sins are hiding here. I will reseal with something like POR15.

Literally everything I touch on this car I either break or is broken! :(

Wow, did they come up with a similar solution for the steering column?

Thankfully they used brand new parts from Porsche for most of the other changes.
