Replaced Brad Penn with VR1 oil, runs 10-15deg cooler
Yesterday, I changed the Brad Penn 20-50 oil in my 964 3.6 transplant motor in my '80SC and filled it with dino Valvoline VR1 20-50 Racing oil. I am surprised that now my engine runs ten to fifteen degrees cooler.
Anyone have a similar experience?

Was it their synthetic? I put VR1 20-50 synthetic in my ‘82 and ‘87 930. The 930 runs cooler. The ‘82 is cold blooded so hard to tell. Neither experienced unusual or increased leaking. I like that I have one oil for both.

I noticed the same thing in my 82 Targa during the summer months.

Yep, went from BP 20-50 to Mobil1 15-50 and it runs cooler and also consumption is down.

When I switched from BP 20W-50 to VR-1 (dino) in my '84 I noticed less tappet noise. Been with VR-1 ever since.

makes sense...BP is like sludge compared to VR1 or LiquiMoly

Mmm no difference with summer Los Angeles traffic. Year upon year of switching btwn the two. Must be the placebo.

I went the other way (Vr1 to BP) for my 2.7 and have not seen any difference in operating temps.

I've used both...never noticed any real dif...a little less oil pressure with the VR1 after a few miles of use but both had good pressure.
A little less oil p probably equates to a few degree's.

Is this the "Dino" VR1 you guys are using? https://www.amazon.com/Valvoline-20W-50-VR1-Racing-Motor/dp/B00DJ4FIPQ
Probably an ignorant question, but what is the DINO term? I have an oil change coming up soon and was thinking of using Mobil 1 20w50 V twin, but I'm in Dallas and would be interested in having my temps run cooler if VR1 has that effect. |

Dinosaur. Conventional, non-synthetic motor oil.

I had a similar thing happen going from VR1 to Rotella T6.
But, I do prefer the 'napalm' clinging of VR1. That stuff will stick to the moving parts for years to come for startup protection.

Pour the same amount of ambient room temp Brad Penn 20/50 and Kendall GT-1 on a flat polished metal surface.
Now look at the side profile of the oil puddles, The GT-1 oil naturally lays there in a thicker manner than the BP. Hmmm; So I said to myself. I'm kinda getting thicker not thinner. So thick is better than thin.

Last year I had the 3.0 engine in my '75 911S rebuilt by an old timer formerly employed at Stoddard. He used Brad Penn, I thought OK, as I had no previous experience with Brad Penn oil. End of last year she started smoking from the tailpipe. Last week I changed the Brad Penn with Castrol 20w50 and the smoking seems to have fixed itself. What is with Brad Penn, and why the hoopla? All I can think is Brad Penn does not allow the oil rings do what they are supposed to do.
Castrol has been my oil of choice for about 50 years, it's not broke, why fix it?? |

When I switched from Kendall GT1 to VR1 I also noticed it ran a few degrees cooler. I never used Castrol as I could never find the ZDDP specs on it.
