Engine Rebuild Wizard - What did I leave out?
 

Here's the "getting-near-to-be-finished" Engine Rebuild Wizard:

I'm getting a CGI error.
The specified CGI application misbehaved by not returning a complete set of HTTP headers. The headers it did return are:


Content-type: text/html
Set-Cookie: host=152.13.138.124;

I'm on win XP with the latest version of opera. I also tried it in IE 6.0 and it didn't work either.

Just a thought, but for folks who just need a specific item(s) from one step/process, you may want to offer links directly to the steps rather than having to traverse the whole wizard.

For example. I already have may of the items in the wizard, but will need a gasket set, various sealants and the head stud nuts and washers. Much easier to go directly to that section, click and order.

The wizard is definiely easier ordering items for an engine R&R than navigating the site

Good suggestion Charlie. I suppose I will have to integrate it better with our full catalog, which already contains all of this info to begin with. But jumping to a wizard page from the front page would be very easy...

Or just offer direct links to the different wizard steps at the beginning of the wizard itself. Again, enabling the user to pick and choose what he wants/needs w/o traversing the whole wizard.

I just did that. I'm also going to put a menu at the bottom of each screen?

But seriously, can you guys think of any parts that I might have left out?

I know it's not 'engine' related, but since you do have oil coolers, lines, fuel filters, etc, how about offering rebuild kits for carbs (PMO & Webers), MFI and CIS. MFI and CIS may take a little work as you'd have to make your own kit with the assorted o-rings, intake runner boots, etc. But folks (like me) who are building their engine are probably going to go through the fuel delivery as well. Dont forget vacuum lines for to/from charcoal box, breather cover to oil tank lines, etc.

I did think about that - I have carb rebuild kits in there, but the FI kits would be too large an undertaking to do right now. If the Engine Rebuild Wizard is popular, then I will make a CIS and MFI wizard as well...

In step 3 you talk about the use of Kimwipes . I have a side note to add for any of your readers that are audiophiles that are into vinyl. Kimwipes are excellent for cleaning albums and I believe they are the same product audio outlets sell for a slightly higher price. FFT

Nice job, went through a rebuild for a 3.2

I noticed that you have locktite red in your materials section, what about locktite blue. Also, you could mention in your head stud section of which locktite to use (could list it as an adder to the head studs) Likewise, the stuff needed when installing the oil return tubes.

I noticed that after one selects all the stuff you need on the first page, there is a combo kit offered one enters all the individual data. Could this be listed first???

Classic chicken and egg problem. If I list the kit first, then people don't know what's in it. After reading the material on the page, then you can purchase the kit at the bottom?

Hmmm, this requires some thought...

Looks pretty damn spectacular to me. I just wish I had the time to do a rebuild! All these damn kids running around my house are starting to interfere with my hobby!
