3.2l vacum plumbing .

The engine dies when I remove the oil tank's cap .
I know it is something with the plumbing and routing of the breather hoses .

Here is how I have it .

Well you can check to see if you have a decal beneath the deck lid (FYI), if not, use the pic I'll try to post below.

And as for dying, the cap removal compromises the vac system which will affect the idle - but only to lower it, not stall.

This means you could have an existing vac leak already, or your idle may have been 'adjusted' to low.

For a 3.2 I think the idle is 800 for 84-86, and 880 for 87 and up.

What is the state of your vac lines overall, do you know if the PO replaced any or have you checked them? If they're original, you probably have some leaks.
Edit: just saw the '70 in your garage - a stealth 3.2!

Motor is a 86, I think I see where I made the mistake . I have trottle housing vacuum going to the oil tank . It should be where the brake booster would be connected.

Where do I connect the line from the small line from the oil tank?

If you mean the small line off of the oil filler, you should have a vacuum limiter (PVC valve), then the line to the Air Valve then 2 lines off of the Air Valve.

The large Air valve line goes to the Throttle body (see pic) and the small one (mine is covered in braided cloth) from the top of the Air Valve goes to the temp sw behind the TB (pic).

The other 2 large oil tank lines go to the eng breather (eng deck) and the Elbow between the TB and the AFM.

ok,here is a picture of the back of mine. it looks a bit different.

*note that on your pic there is a brown tube labeled "plastic elbow" I don't have that.

I think that I am missing the pcv vave ( a part number would ne helpful)

the two big ports for the oil tank, I got.

I have number 3 going to the top pc port that is also used for the brake vac.
if I put #3 on the small port of the oil tank, it revs and idle hunts

I am nnot sure where to put #1

It looks like you are missing some of the vac line hardware when compared to my pic.

Ignoring that for the moment, In my prev pic, the brown tube GOES TO the Air Box ( the large black plastic Elbow between the AFM and TB)

The large vac line to the oil tank filler neck should have a flow restrictor inside of it (looks like a funnel) PN 930-107-289-00

The Air Valve is PN930-207-227-00

The Vacuum Limiter PN 930-207-229-00 can be had from Autozone and is a PCV, PN 4298

Here is a pic and PET shot.
My red numbers on the lines correspond with your picture.

In this shot of the PET, item 31 is the air valve, 36 is the Vac limiter (from oil tank), and 21 is the air box (plastic elbow)

You don't need the PCV assembly to make the car idle with the oil tank cap removed. I've personally seen/performed 3.2 engines swapped into older cars and the PCV assembly was not implemented. You can just plug whatever ports are present for that PCV stuff and do without it. However the restrictor piece inside the tank hose, the one which leads to the port in the rubber throttle body elbow, is needed to keep the engine from stalling when you remove the oil tank cap.

I have the restrictor on the line . What I am missing is the air valve and the pcv. Should the restrictor be on the motor or the tank's side?

you nailed it!

the restictor was on the hose coming from the motor, not the elbow. Switched it, no more stalling..

Special Thank to Dan for keeping this thread alive with all good guidance and KTL for nailing it1

I did a lousy job documenting the location of various lines on the right hand side of the engine bay where access is ridiculously tight. I know where the two large oil breather lines go, but the others are a mystery on my 87 3.2. HELP!

I’ll try to break my problem down a bit. There is a smaller diameter rubber hose that is part of the larger oil breather hose harness.

This smaller hose slides easily in the harness so i can’t tell where the two ends should be positioned.

There is also a small vacuum line that I can’t figure where it’s home is.

These darn lines are standing in the way of getting my car in for an alignment after many months of a suspension refresh. Thanks!
