74 2.7 won't start

My 74 2.7 sat for many years. I clean and painted inside of tank, put new fuel lines on, new fuel filter and new fuel in the tank. I had the engine rebuilt several years ago by BHR in Kansas City. When I try to start it, it fires and then just turns over. If I let it sit for 10 min or so it will fire but not start. Raising the plunger does not help. It appears that it has the correct amount of fuel at first but then floods itself and won't start.

I've been coached to be especially methodical with CIS systems, paying it forward.

The accumulator plays a critical role on these cars, it's not uncommon apparently for them to be marginal if old or sitting a long time.

Keep us posted.

Take a look at the Fuel Injection section of our "How To" Tech Articles, lots of helpful information there in regards to troubleshooting issues related to the CIS and related components.

Haven't been able to work on the car until today! Hooked the guage up between the FD and the WUR and got a reading of 3.3bar. I didn't have a shut-off valve so I couldn't check the system pressure. I assume you need this valve so you can turn off the line to the WUR and get the pressure coming out of the FD?

Tom,

If your pressure gauge does not have the shutoff valve, you could still use it to measure the system pressure. How? Simply connect the gauge between the main fuel delivery line and the FD inlet. The pressure reading on the gauge would be the system pressure.

Tom,

What is 3.3 bar? CCP or WCP?

Tony,
Thanks for the tip on checking system pressure! The 3.3 bar is 48psi.

Tom,

3.3 bar is too high for CCP. Test for air leaks. Are the fuel injectors delivering mist-like spray patterns? Keep us posted.

Tony,
I finally got back to checking the fuel pressure on my 1974 2.7 CIS. With the
WUR unplugged: 3.6 bar - 52psi.
WUR plugged in: 3.6 bar - 52 psi.
system pressure: 4.5 bar - 64psi
Leak down after 15min steady at 1.4 bar - 20psi
Measured fuel from injectors and all spraying the same amount of fuel.
When I try to start the car it fires and runs for a few seconds. Didn't have anyone with me but think if I sprayed fuel or starting fluid into the intake, it would run. Will try that next.

Is your WUR the one shown in the lower left corner of these pages? If so, your CCP @ 30C should be about 1.7-2.0, not 3.3. A too high CCP gives a too lean mixture @ startup.

BTW I'm guessing 30C for you in FL. You should verify the ambient temp when you do a CCP test.

Tom,

Your cold control fuel pressure is out of spec. What is the Bosch ID # of your WUR? The motor will start and stumble and die. The only thing that keeps it to run is the CSV. After you release the ignition switch from START, the motor simply stall because the fuel is too lean due to very high cold control pressure. You need to get the WUR calibrated.

Paul/Tony,
The WUR Bosch ID is 0438 140129. This is the number stamped on the case. There is another number on a BOSCH tag affixed to the side of the WUR and it is B 438 149595 747-137.

Should I buy the repair kit for the WUR?

Tom,

I will be done with the Engine Rebuilding Workshop in 2 days and will focus in my CIS troubleshooting commitments next week. I could do the testing and evaluation of your WUR-129 for FREE. Sent it to me with a return shipping label if you are interested. WUR-129 is a better WUR for your car than the -001/-008.
